ehhhh…..not sure if serious, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest that “maybe” (at best), they were the first to expose rap to mainstream radio. If so, God bless them for doing so…..but they didn’t invent the genre.
Inserting a Rap verse and recorded it. Not rap or Hip Hop itself. Nobody will never really know the answer to that. It would be like asking who invented music.
correct. "Rapture" was the first rap song to hit #1 on the pop charts, but not the first song with rapping in it by far. I'm sure Sugarhill Gangs "Rapper Delight" wasn't the first either, but it predated "Rapture." by a year. "Rappers Delight" didn't hit no 1 in the U.S., so it didn't reach all audiences like "Rapture" did.
This starts with rap though. It isn't a song with a rap verse inserted into it. You find me a video pre-dating blondie where it's a song featuring a rap verse, then you can correct me.
I mean no disrespect. you could make the case that the Jubilaires did it way back in the 1940s. I love this song. Decades later The Dove Brothers would combine part of these lyrics with Sister Rosetta Tharpes version of "Didn't It Rain" which resulted in a really cool amalgamation of the two songs.
My favorite part of this viral track was the kid and others worked to help get him registered in Jamacia and is getting royalties and paid for his music credits. It's a remixed Jamaican Gospel song.
