Brad Ausmus might be a great GM. He's just in no way currently qualified for the job and it would be a slap in the face of every guy that has legitimate front office experience.

I agree that there are much better options and some are current candidates.

But Ausmus does have 3 years front office experience and for years and years, as an Astros fan, I heard how he will be a great GM some day.

Maybe Bagwell wants to be more involved with the Astros and he feels that development is in his wheelhouse?

Well of course he would, old gonna old school. Scares the hell out of me but DB just likes to have that option, again, its not realy needed.

Special Assistant to the GM is a questionable title. Craig Biggio has been a special assistant to the GM for a long time, and I don't think anyone thinks he's in a position to be a GM.

I guess it depends on what part of player development he is helping with. I can tell you that pretty much all our young players, other than Yordan, had pretty big adjustment coming to the bigs at the plate. Bregman, Tucker, etc. Maybe he can help guys get MLB ready better. He is one of the best hitters of all time. Hopefully, that is more technique/approach than just talent.

On a side note, sometimes I think Alvarez is underachieving. Considering how well he hits, and how much power he has, he should be putting up close to Judge numbers. The fact that he hasn't even been near the top of the league in home runs every season is mind boggling.

I would say that being 3rd in his league in only 135 games in near the top.

You can't compare him or any player to Judge. Judge got live balls last season while the rest of the league did not.

I only have fan info but from what I remember about Bagwell, his ability to adjust pitch to pitch and AB to AB was raved about. That would seem to make for a good foundation to pass on.

As for Yordan, I understand your point. He is still only 26, lost some development time due to the defection and an entire year due to COVID/ knee surgery.

2023 is the year he takes the next step.

Not trying to be a smart ass but do tell what is the "next step?" Dude is already a monster. Pretty much stay away from injury and he cruises down the road to the HOF.

From everything I've read and heard I'm VERY happy with this choice.

50 homeruns, >1.1 OPS, and MVP

He's shown he can do it (rookie season). I just think he could hit more homeruns than he does.

Great choice. For what Crane wants in a GM ( a person who makes great player evaluations and developement), he was the best candidate.

    I mistyped the ">". I meant 50 homeruns, over 1.1 OPS, and a MVP.

Yordan is a great Astro but is still young and has lots to improve on. And I fully expect him to.

It's not fair to expect him to be Babe Ruth at age 25 but he is really close.

Last year he "only" had 97 RBI which feels low considering his other stats.

    His OPS was 1.019

    But:
    With runners on base: .877
    When team is losing: .811
    With RISP: .920
    2 outs and RISP: .824

Now all of those are good numbers but not the superstar numbers Astros fans expect.

But the good news is there is every reason to think it's simply part of growing into his prime and he will get there.
