Hell, if you told me he would average 22 ppg his second year I wouldn’t have been disappointed either, yet here we are. Who knew he would be doing it so inefficiently while being a massive negative in every other aspect of the game.
He's done it as inefficiently as Booker or Kobe in year 2 or nearly any other young future star/superstar guard at age 20 outside of rarities like Lebron who's a wing who can play like a big often anyways. .
Considering defense is our biggest issue and the near perfect fit he would be next to Sengun, too many wins to still be stuck at the bottom of the lotto. So maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I’m willing to hold off until we see who we end up drafting next year.
You really think that? I honestly think he'd get hidden and forgotten about like Jabari. Jabari drafted to the Cavs would still be hyped up because "he would be contributing to winning". I remember last year how the Cavs we're doing well, attributing their defensive improvement to Mobley and then Allen was injuries for a prolonged period and their defensive rating plummeted during that span.
Also how does Mobley complement Sengun? Sengun at the moment isn't a floor spacer. He doesn't stretch the floor as he isn't perceived as a good shooter yet. Mobley shoots 17% from 3. Those two starting together would result in defenses just packing the paint and with the roster around us that also has poor shooters, Jesus Christ they just going to play zone all day with drop coverage and just have a wall at the paint a la how they guard Gainnis except Sengun and Mobley don't have anywhere near the ability to overcome that yet like Giannis can as he's transcendent. KPJ and EG would be the only two competent shooters defenses would pay attention to. It would be an offense with the worst spacing in the league.
Kobe and Booker and every single one of these examples improved massively from year 1 to year 2. I think it’s a fair argument that his usage increased which leads to slight dip in efficiency, but every one of those examples also increased usage while showing improving efficiency.
Devin Booker dropped his efficiency. And his starting point was even lower than Green's as both his rookie and sophomore year ts% were lows that Green hasn't averaged yet.
Also Kobe increased his ts% by.4% in his second year. Epic improvement. In fact he dropped his efg% which means he got better at getting to the line though. Green could literally have a 2 week decent stretch and have a higher ts% than his rookie year while increasing is role with defenses paying more attention to him.
Allen shoots the 3 even less than Sengun, like none, and fit fine with Mobley offensively. It’s on defense that Mobley is the perfect fit with Sengun, able to cover the perimeter and also protect the rim. I keep saying Sengun needs a Jaren Jackson or Johnathan Issac next to him and Mobley is that mold defensively.
Okay but how does he fit offensively? He's a number 2 pick. He needs to be someone with an important role on offense. How would he fit offensively with Sengun? We can get a Jaren Jackson type player through free agency or trade, not second pick overall.
Booker went from -2.8 bpm to -1.9 his second year. Green could still get to that if he improves in the second half, but he isn’t there currently.
Because Stone helped finalize the sale of the team and the owner became confident in Stone. Eli doesn't play office politics, and really doesn't like some duties that a GM does - he doesn't like making all the phone calls or press conferences. Eli is an expert at analytics and good at scouting - I was surprised he choose to stay with the Rockets and not go to the Sixers with Morey. I wouldn't be surprised if Eli eventually ends up in Philadelphia or even Sacramento - the working conditions in the Rockets front office are not the best right now.
We really need to stop the Kobe stuff in order to have a real conversation. Kobe was. -0.1 as a 18 year old rookie and went to +1.4 bpm as a 19 yo sophomore. That’s what an all time great is supposed to look like. As I said, I’m not super concerned with Jalen’s ts, it’s how bad he is at the other stuff that contributes to winning that’s the problem. Like you better have an unworldly ts if that’s the case.
I guess I'm not surprised, but this type of thing is the essence of my worry this season. I feel like this quote could be about the locker room, the coach's offices, really the whole organization, and it wouldn't be any different. At what point do people just start to say [insert Eric Gordon voice], "This isn't fun." The TF business mindset seems to be represented well by his approach to running a restaurant. Who cares how good the omelet is if they are distracted by these colorful fish. How much can I charge for the omelet before they start to care that our food kind of sucks? I'm worried that we may not ever really right the ship because we never had leadership that cared about making good omelets.
The Rockets front office and the organization is still ran like a family business and not a multi-billion dollar corporation. Before Daryl Morey left, he was pushing for increased spending in the front office, player development and scouting. He looked at other organizations and knew the Rockets were outdated and needed to have changes made. Stone made some of the changes, but they were mostly not philosophical and just half measures like what he did to the scouting department with the additions he made. At this point I suspect that when Stone eventually leaves, the front office will be gutted most likely.
Les Alexander wasn't always rational and when he would get mad, he would get very mad..... however he would leave his employees alone as long as they were somewhat successful. The front office did not see him every day or week or even month at times. So they had a degree of freedom. Morey was in charge and as long as you worked hard, he was flexible..... now with TF he has cut costs and even when he isn't present, his family is present and it isn't a great place to work.
sheesh…with takes like that, Idk why Marcus Morris’ momma isn’t in charge of some team’s scouting department
