"WE" as a species are most certainly doomed. And not necessarily because of anything we are doing or won't do in the future. That's just the nature of life. Everything eventually meets its demise. We are not special. Be it an asteroid, a mega volcano, or global warming causing the development of fungal organism that can survive in human hosts, we, as humans, have an expiration date. Meh.
I sorta agree with you...and sorta don't. I think we're the first species on this planet that is consciously aware of its (the species) own mortality. Being able to recognize that, we have an ability to attempt to avoid our demise. Other species don't have the intellect to recognize or figure that out.
