Brown has been at worst the second most likely guy since all of this has started. He was one of the 3 guys I heard about weeks after Click was gone. It all was going to come down to how well Brown and Crane got along personality wise. Crane had to talk Brown into even listening about the job. Brown is exceptional at talent evaluation and the nuts and bolts of baseball and known as being very tough and explosive at times. He is someone that believes in analytical data and is very progressive. FWIW I think he would be an exceptional hire.
Another funny quote. 790's Gordy to Sparky: "What do the Latin players call you?" Sparky: "Esparky" Still laughing.
I think Brown is preferable to the alternatives, but if there was someone like Click out there available I would prefer them over Brown. Brown is a scout with a lot of experience with a wealth of experience but has more or less plodding along until the Braves new GM brought him over elevated his role. Those two seem pretty tight so it will be interesting to see how hard he fights to keep Brown on staff.
Edward Cabrera 24yr old RHP with a 3.01 era last year. For some bats. Meyers a true CFer, Maton, Blanco and a couple Prospects sounds bad? Then flip Urquidy for a true inline CF with some pop and speed And that sounds bad? Ur crazy
Just long enough to get a dozen text messages SAYING OOOOOMMMGGGGG! Granted, didn't have time to read them, but our phones both beeping is enough.
If the defensive numbers in CF are accurate at a minimum he should be able to have a career as a 4th/5th OF but yeah- I’m no longer holding my breath.
With Brown the situation was one of a lack of opportunities. He was pigeon holed very early as just a scout and not an executive. He has mastered scouting and player development (especially in the USA). He has had to prove himself over time and with the Braves over the last 3-4 years, he has been more than just the head scout. He has played a huge part in contract extensions, coaching decisions in the minors, draft decisions and he is big into alternative training. The GM already has told Brown he deserves to look for GM spots and he recently went public and said Brown will do very well as a GM. I like him a lot. He is very good at bridging the old school mentality with modern technology and is open to new ideas. Also, he is not a push over and he isn’t afraid to get into it with others if he feels strongly about it.
I’m sold on Brown. Bring him in. Unless we can afford to and want to wait for Stearns or other options, just get Brown and call it a day.
It isn’t anything against Sig, it just worked out that he liked Brown more. Plus he gets information from another successful organization.
Only thing that worries me about him from what you said. Hopefully he's not a hot-head if he gets hired, especially with a clubhouse as tightly-knit as this one. Just my two cents, but the 'Stros obviously know more than I do.
At least we wouldn't have to give up a couple of first round picks for any of these candidates. It doesn't look like the Texans will even have the opportunity to do so.
My preferences for the role were either 1) Analytics guy with common sense; or 2) Guy that has a competitive advantage with Latin players. Brown doesn't really check either box... I'll support him but the potential hire just seems off in terms of what's most important to our success. After the Click situation, we were not going to get a GM that is truly headstrong and independent... since those candidates would view the role as a weak influence GM role (to a strong owner). We'd be looking for a step-up candidate or a candidate that hasn't seen opportunities in the past... which fits the bill here.
I actually don't know the personalities well enough to do anything than parrot Nook. If he likes Brown, it's good enough for me.
Well, since it seems likely that this organization is dedicated to letting talent leave when their time is up, coupled with not being super aggressive to extend young talent, looks like we damn sure better gabe a draft and development guy be really good at drafting and developing or it will get pretty ugly after 25, in comparison to how it is now.
