Haha yeah. A Jacksonville beat writer wrote this during Trevor's draft. Glad he's not GM... people are always looking at the "next QB crop"... Howell went 5th round the following year, Ratter transferred and is staying on for a senior year. "John from Jacksonville, FL You've made it abundantly clear Jacksonville should not draft Trevor Lawrence. Why? A: Lawrence is the logical first pick of the draft. I get it. So why would I consider trading the pick? It's because Lawrence is so coveted he could deliver a treasure trove of picks in a trade the Jags could use to build a dominant roster, and I attach more value to that than I do to a quarterback in what appears to be a deep crop of them. Sam Howell and Spencer Rattler will be next year's stars. I get the sense we're headed for a long run of talent at quarterback. Spread offenses nearly guarantee it."
Depends on what they think of Young. You know my thoughts. Give me what I've drawn up in the post you quoted, over picking Young at 1-2. \\ Do I think Cal will do what I want him to do? Not a chance, after all they've been a joke of a franchise for the last 20 years because they always go for the shiny new marketing toy.
I'm willing to bet that if you win 5-6 games next year they will be able to trade up and get the better QB than what's in this years class. But if you sign a vet to a 3 year deal then you trade back for even more picks so in 2025 you will be loaded with picks for the potential Klubnik/Manning/Weigman etc... class. I would rather take the gamble than gamble on a midget.
First, the only shiny new QB toy I can remember the Texans drafting, outside of their first draft, was Watson and I believe he was pretty good. As far as Young’s size, are DLs in the NFL that much bigger than DLs in the SEC? He has seemed to do pretty good in the best college football conference in the country.
Every week he's going to be playing against talent like Georgia had on their defense 2 yrs ago, on in some cases better.
Been trying to pound this over and over again, great to see the comments from a beat writer add credence to it. “Howell and Rattler next year” we saw how that turned out. And it’s funny, Howell was at NC kinda like drake maye (and trubisky) and rattler was at Oklahoma which is where Caleb Williams. And I don’t wanna hear “well maye and Williams are way above Howell and rattler” cuz trubisky was high as well. Too many variables, and unlike the jags, we can’t even get first overall pick once, much less twice for next year. All the bad teams picking will probably be looking for a qb, so when we get 4th pick overall, we’ll have to trade 8 picks just to get to #1 for one of those QBs. So stupid to be planning like that. Then we end up with 3rd best qb in next years draft which is no better than the top 1-2 qbs of this one. We also have 2 first round picks next year as well to make the team better, let’s get the QB first. feel free to tag this and call me out when both Williams and Maye remain top prospects, but I’m willing to bet at least one of them pulls a Howell or rattler and falls back.
Not only that, but if we draft a quarterback and we still end up top 3, we can trade back for a decent price and further multiply our draft haul. Not sure why people want to wait. You get a quarterback when you have the opportunity. Whether that's through the draft or free agency. Now, if you want to talk about signing a Derek Carr to a short term deal and potentially drafting a QB next year without trade multiple high valued assets, that's a different story. One that can't be written until draft time next year.
With this, I'm hoping they stick to their guns and upgrade their defense with Anderson/Carter instead of trading down. But could also do the trade down and still get them at 4 if it's with the ****ing Colts.
So now we're skipping 2023 and 2024 for QBs that haven't even gotten to college yet? Maybe the Texans should scour junior highs and tank for 10 years in the the hopes of getting whoever the top 6th grader is out there.
That wasn't an NFL defense. In fact it wasn't even the Georgia defense from 2 years ago. I dont think Stroud is a bad QB. He's just not a guy that's a franchise QB. Top 10-15 sure, top 5, no way.
What we're doing is setting the franchise up for success, rather than settling for mediocrity. Your mind set is why the Texans have always been where they are today. Mediocre in the best of times and on the down side where they are today.
