Can't have little Johnny feeling bad about how black people have been and still are being treated in this country. That's the ****ed up part. Of course little Johnny should feel bad. We should all feel bad. Of course little Johnny shouldn't feel bad about HIMSELF or his race in general, but damn he should have some sympathy. He cant have empathy, because he has nothing to empathize with. This whole right wing narrative that one shouldn't feel bad about **** that has happened is asinine. Feeling bad helps to ensure it stops and doesn't happen again.
If I were in Johnny's shoes with minorities hating on my skin and status despite being a Florida man from dead-end Jacksonville, I would find that empathy you're lacking from a different source, whether it be other "privileged" hillbilly white folk, dead end deplorables, or P-P-Proud Boys. Making these declarations while being pedantic about "sympathy vs empathy" just shows an overall lack of compassion that's common in these internet arguments. Maybe an individual doesn't really deserve it, but these are all in the abstract and can never replace face to face contact.
The ironic thing about this is that it's very 'Anti-woke' when you consider the original meaning of 'Woke' so hey, I guess he accomplished that goal at least. But it'll help to make very clear in future elections with Desantis that he's no ally to black people which fuels my original feeling on his candidacy...I don't think he will play well on the national stage. I don't think the rust belt, which the GOP NEEDS to win will care too much about his culture war and I don't think his stances on things like this and abortion are going to help him. I guess it matters if Biden runs, he can win against Biden but even that isn't a sure thing. I think he loses to many of the would be Democratic candidates. I just don't think the fight against 'Woke' is going to resonate with many people and in fact will turn many people off when they see the fight against 'Woke' means banning African American studies and banning books.
Trying to paint DeSantis as a racist when he made a black man Surgeon General and empowered him very much seems a bit odd.
I've noticed that. The group that often decries how soft the younger generations are and how they are coddled are demanding that we shouldn't even be acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ in classes to protect the younger generations.
The anti-vaccine guy who promoted hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin? The guy who is against Trans Healthcare? That guy? The Herschel Walker of Surgeon Generals? Yeah DeSantis has a "black friend" too.
I guess Trump isn’t racist because he made Ben Carson Secretary of Housing and campaigned for Herschel Walker…
There were slavers that had black best friends too and lovers even. There are many cases of racist people with power giving power to black people. I mean, Donald Sterling ring a bell? This is like the misogynist excuse of "I don't hate women, I have a wife!" You can still be racist and make exceptions for people.
Everyone has a different POV on what constitute "wrong ideas", and some are adamant that those ideas should not be discussed in a classroom of young students. I think it can be instructive to teach about all sorts of ideas in a classroom, even ones that are controversial or are considered divisive/hateful by some. It depends on the maturity of the students in the classrom and how the subject is covered. The Hamline student and the local CAIR person were wrong, but discussing their POV in a classroom is also worthwhile.
I think you're focused on whether communicating out loud such opinions would be productive or counter-productive. Maybe it's not helpful to tell someone that they shouldn't feel the way they do. Sometimes, it's best to keep things to yourself, even if you're right.
they want people to be blind to what has happened, and what still goes on, in this country…the game plan is apparent black people have had their eyes opened for a long time, aka what used to be considered “woke” Black newborn babies in the United States are more likely to survive childbirth if they are cared for by Black doctors, but three times more likely than White Babies to die when looked after by White doctors, a study has found. The mortality rate of Black newborns in hospital shrunk by between 39% and 58% when Black physicians took charge of the birth, according to the research, which laid bare how shocking racial disparities in human health can affect even the first hours of a person's life. By contrast, the mortality rate for White babies was largely unaffected by the doctor's race. notice how they went and changed the definition of woke to basically anything diverse or not white…now “woke” is stupid sh*t like Scooby Doo, She-Hulk, the green M&M, too many women in a movie, etc when it had nothing to do with that originally
I think it depends. When something is so well accepted scientifically or factually, is an alternative even appropriate? There is a group of people that think the Earth is flat. Primarily schools might mention such group, but they will indeed teach students that the Earth is round and not flat. Even for something that isn't yet well accepted, there is room for it in post-grad level education. An advanced academic class that focuses on a single theory is naturally skewed heavily to persuade for that theory and against another theory. I would expect a class on the Integrated Information Theory of Consciousness to persuasively present evidence for that theory vs the Global Workspace Theory of Consciousness and vice-versa.
I was referring to disciplines that are more interpretive and for which there isn't widespread consensus among experts in the field. Not talking about settled science. A course that is focusing on a particular social theory that is in any way contentious should make room for arguments both for and against it.
