What is the difference, other than masks offend you because of the politics over masking mandates? Masks are uncomfortable? Wearing a suit and tie can also be pretty uncomfortable.
So you support the proposed legislation (which I guess is still in the planning phase) insofar as it impacts very large businesses or corporations, but you agree that it shouldn't apply to small businesses?
It is exactly the same in as far as individual freedom and the freedom to run their businesses the way they wish to run their businesses. The only difference is your own personal feelings. There is no difference in individual choice and business choice.
Another hypothetical: If DeSantis declared legislation that bans women from wearing Islamic headscarves in public buildings (similar to laws in France), would you support it on individual liberty grounds? Would you be at all conflicted about it?
I don't think you actually know or understand what DeSantis is proposing. https://www.myfloridahouse.gov/Sect...tType=Analysis&BillNumber=0001B&Session=2021B If I understand it correctly, he is suggesting to make these rules, which are currently in place on a temporary basis, permanent. I don't see anything in there about prohibiting small or large businesses from requiring masks to be worn, other than schools or local officials. Would you mind telling me what in there you disagree with?
I am in favour of banning Islamic headscarves because they are a symbol of ideologically motivated oppression, and it is questionable how "voluntary" the women's decision to wear them really is, in many cases.
My understanding is he is proposing to expand it to bans on vaccine/masking requirements by private businesses. This was rejected by the Florida legislature the first time around. DeSantis wants ban on COVID mask and vaccine mandates to be permanent (tampabay.com) DeSantis wants ban on COVID mask and vaccine mandates to be permanent He was joined Tuesday by state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo. TALLAHASSEE — Despite facing pushback from medical professionals and businesses, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced legislation Tuesday that would make permanent a law to penalize companies that require employees to wear masks or be vaccinated for COVID-19 and added a new ban on medical boards reprimanding doctors for spreading COVID misinformation. “This is just nuts that we’re still doing this,” DeSantis said to cheering supporters in Panama City Beach. “We need to be leading on this by making all of these protections permanent in Florida statute as we need to do in the upcoming legislative session.” The proposal will attempt to make permanent a series of laws passed by legislators in November 2021 after DeSantis called a special session aimed at restricting Florida businesses that were following a federal law requiring mask mandates or requiring employees to be vaccinated. If approved by Florida legislators, the measure would continue to prohibit COVID-19 vaccine and mask requirements in schools and government, and prohibit COVID-19 vaccine requirements for employment or travel. This year, DeSantis wants to expand the sanctions on businesses by prohibiting employers from hiring or firing based on vaccine status or wearing a mask, and he wants to revive a failed proposal from last year’s legislative session that would make it more difficult for a medical licensing board to reprimand or sanction a doctor for views expressed by the medical professional — including on social media. Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo also spoke at the news conference Tuesday and repeated his claim that masks are not effective in preventing the spread of the virus and dismissed the effectiveness of vaccines. “This is the first time in history where we are using this technology widely in human beings,” he said, referring to the mRNA vaccines. “You’re telling people to put it in children, and you’ve never even shown the children to gain from it in terms of an actual help. That’s the land of crazy. Florida is the land of sanity.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website lists several studies that have shown masking to be helpful in curbing the spread of the virus. In January 2022, a CDC report found vaccinated Americans were far less likely both to contract the virus and to die from it. Leading House Democrat responds House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell of Tampa called the governor and his administration “the No. 1 peddler of misinformation from the anti-vax establishment.” “It is a fake ideology with real consequences,” she said, noting that less than one-third of Florida’s nursing home residents, the most vulnerable age group, are up to date on their vaccines, even though the state Department of Health recommends them. Driskell emphasized that “no one ever promised total immunity, but those vaccines do lessen the chance of infection and they increase the likelihood of a milder case if you do get sick.” She accused the governor of “rewriting history” after promoting the vaccines when they were first available. Since former President Donald Trump lost his reelection bid, DeSantis has sought to become the face of the opposition to the Biden administration’s COVID policies, which the governor said were overreaching. He called lawmakers into special session in November 2021 to punish companies that followed the federal law. But lawmakers rejected some of his proposals, including changing the law to open the door for businesses to be sued for coronavirus-related liability if the business required their employees to be vaccinated. Business leaders quietly told legislators then that they didn’t want to be told by the state what they couldn’t do any more than they wanted the federal government to tell them what they had to do to keep their workplaces safe in the midst of the pandemic. More than 100 companies, including some of the largest corporations operating in Florida, had adopted vaccination requirements for their employees, with some already issuing layoff notices to those who didn’t comply. ...
I don't see what you are claiming there. There is a massive difference between a private business requiring a forced vaccination from its employees and a private business requiring customers to wear a mask on their premises. One is a forced medical intervention, "or lose your job". He is going against that. I don't see where he would prohibit businesses from having mask requirements on their premises. These businesses will go out of business all on their own.
We haven't yet seen the formal legislative proposal, but this is what he says on his page. I highlighted below the parts relating to government prohibition on masking requirements from businesses. Governor Ron DeSantis Announces Initiative to Make Protections from COVID Mandates Permanent, Enact New Protections for Free Speech for Medical Practitioners On January 17, 2023, in News Releases, by Staff PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. — Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a common-sense legislative proposal to make permanent COVID-19 freedoms in Florida. This strong pro-freedom, anti-mandate action will permanently protect Floridians from losing their jobs due to COVID-19 vaccine mandates, protects parents’ rights, and institutes additional protections that prevent discrimination based on COVID-19 vaccine status. To read the full proposal, click here. “When the world lost its mind, Florida was a refuge of sanity, serving strongly as freedom’s linchpin,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “These measures will ensure Florida remains this way and will provide landmark protections for free speech for medical practitioners.” “As a health sciences researcher and physician, I have personally witnessed accomplished scientists receive threats due to their unorthodox positions,” said State Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo. “However, many of these positions have proven to be correct, as we’ve all seen over the past few years. All medical professionals should be encouraged to engage in scientific discourse without fearing for their livelihoods or their careers.” In 2021, Governor DeSantis signed legislation to protect Florida jobs and parents’ rights to make health care decisions for their students, banning private employer vaccine mandates and mask mandates across the state. Governor DeSantis continues to safeguard Floridians’ freedoms and ensure no one is discriminated against based on their COVID-19 vaccine status or is subject to a two-tiered test and mask discrimination policy from employers. The proposal includes the permanent prohibition of mandates that are continuously proven ineffective, including: Permanently prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine passports in Florida; Permanently prohibiting COVID-19 vaccine and mask requirements in all Florida schools; Permanently prohibiting COVID-19 masking requirements at businesses; and Permanently prohibiting employers from hiring or firing based on mRNA jabs. Included in Governor DeSantis’ proposal are first amendment rights guarantees for medical professionals, ensuring no one loses their job or medical license for voicing their professional opinions in Florida. The legislation will safeguard medical professionals from discrimination based on their personal religious views. Governor DeSantis remains committed to ensuring COVID freedoms are upheld in Florida and will fight against local governments, businesses, and corporations that attempt to impose authoritarian policies surrounding COVID.
When a politician uses pandemic restrictions as their rallying cry against authoritarianism, rest assured that poltician is hiding real authorarianism using this stuff as a deflection.
I guess we will have to wait for the actual legislative proposal. I suspect there will be some nuance with regards to the question you asked before. I mean, if someone can start a business where like-minded people can jointly follow all kinds of fetishes, why not allow a business that revolves around a mask fetish, as long as people have the choice to ignore that crap.
Yes that seems to be the trend here. Individuals should have the liberty to wear what they want except when I don't ideologically agree with what they wear.
Yes, people should have the liberty to wear what they want, unless what they wear stands for an ideology of hate and intolerance. Like a Hakenkreuz or the full veil.
So in other words you agree with the Woke people that people shouldn't wear things that others find hateful.
