I think if he gets the Panthers job, it's a pair deal with Tom Brady. Doesn't seem like a particularly good fit to me since they don't have a ton of elite talent to surround them with, though.

I think yesterday (after the WC round) was the first day he was allowed to do in-person interviews with anyone for some reason. I can see why the rule applies to coordinators in the playoffs, but not sure why it applied to Payton.

You are correct. And I think that is typical, as allowable by the NFL, especially with current coaches.

The fact that the Carolina meeting is in person is telling.

I agree. Brady had far more talent in Tampa and wilted in the playoffs.

Good luck if they pair up.

Yeah, the Sean Payton situation is a lot like the *redacted* situation except arguably worse. The fact that the Saints have virtually ZERO leverage here tells me that this is 100% negotiable. If he agrees to come to "Team X", then the Saints can take what's offered, or take nothing. With Deshaun, he had multiple teams he was willing to go to in order to help drive the bidding war somewhat, but with this, there will be 1 team he wants, and the Saints will have to take what they can get.

If Carolina is trying to pair up Payton and Brady, like you said.....good luck with that. Clearly they're just trying to sell tickets. Brady is done.

Frankly, this seems like something the Texans would do. Stunt the growth of the team by 2 years while you try and sell tickets.

Word around the league* is Gannon is the Texans guy now.

    *just my personal opinion

At the same time, if its Carolina, in the same division of the saints, I would ask for more. If they don't wanna pony up then fine. But I wouldnt want my hall of fame coach going to someone else in the same division.

I get what you are saying, and mostly agree. But I think if you get Bryce Young, then Payton by himself. If you get Brady, then you can draft Levis or Richardson and let them sit for a year. Which I think is best for them anyways. That is the only positive to getting Brady.

The Texans need to come out of this with either Sean Payton, DeMeco Ryans or Shane Steichen. Doing all this for Johnathan Gannon is gonna piss me off because they could’ve just hired dude last year if they wanted to.

He wasn’t eligible to be interviewed in person until Friday. There’s some rule against it.

LMAO @ these sports talk radio guys setting up the disappointment talking up Sean Payton like its a lock he’s coming to the Texans.

Denver is a better gig BY FAR!

    Carolina is also better.

This is always true of coach trades, but people like Gruden or Belichick still fetched first round picks (or multiple ones, in some cases).

Saints get leverage because if the Texans (for example) decide they want Payton and Payton wants the Texans, the Saints basically get to say "how willing are you to give up your first choice of coach?". Whatever the Saints get is a bonus for them, so they can play hardball and say "try again next year, Sean".

Brady looked horrific and totally done his last year in New England. His last throw was a pick-6 in the playoffs and he had a noodly arm all season long. And then he went to Tampa, threw 40+ TDs and won a SB. So who really knows with him.

Denver is the better gig by far????? Oh lord. Please explain this one without basing all your hopes on Russel Wilson being good.

Wilson is a key to it, though. If Payton thinks he can fix Wilson, then they have a ready-made superbowl contender (though still a tier below KC/BUF/CIN/SF/PHI). The team is loaded with talent and he wouldn't have to deal with a rebuild. That also makes his desire for roster control less important.

Of course, if Wilson is a bust, they are screwed. But it all depends on what Payton thinks of Wilson's issues.

The organization has history and is an NFL legacy team. (think Cowboys, Raiders, Bears, Giants, Steelers)

Russell Wilson is not the reason why I think that…

Actual reason is new ownership, the city of Denver is a fantastic place to live and Denver gets more national coverage and isn't treated like a fly over city like Houston.

Denver has decent offensive pieces in place already and isn't in a true rebuild mode like Houston is.

The only plus for Houston is the division is much weaker than the AFC West and the owner is beyond desperate.

And whatever our opinion of Wilson is, what are the odds that any coach sees a rookie QB as being an instant star?

The idea that rookie QB is obviously better for a coach looking to win now than Wilson is laughable.
