This thread is about comparing improvement from rookie to sophomore years. You can use the same source and look up how Harden improves in every way from year 1 to year 2 just as Sengun has. Jalen has not, that’s the problem. Maybe it’s a sophomore slump and he will improve next year, we can only hope. Maybe the whole mamba mentality and hard worker stuff was just predraft PR to pump his draft stock, because if he was really such a hard worker we have not seen the progress.
Also Green's assist rate jumped by four percentage points from his rookie season to this season. No credit for that I guess? Zero improvement right?
Life doesn't work like that buddy. Hard workers can stumble into a wall. He's in a wall right now. He's struggling. But again this goes back to my point of the fickleness your narrative and mine stand on. A few weeks of play changes outlooks for these players at these ages with this little experience. That's how fickle the narratives are... A few weeks
By all means, keep hope alive that he'll magically learn to play basketball eventually.... but you'll have to understand that some will require evidence instead of going on blind faith.
I did give him credit for that, I said he’s been making those pocket passes more. However his overall rating is the same as last year, no improvement. Whatever marginal improvement he has in passing he’s losing somewhere else, I’m guessing scoring efficiency. Also the higher assist % came with higher usage which are correlated, so not real improvement.
We are talking about his numbers for the entire year which is over half a season now. Not a few weeks. If we are talking about the last few weeks then he has not shown 0 improvement vs last year, he has severely REGRESSED.
Huh? Do you still have confusion on the concept of "rate"? Also I don't think "pocket passes" alone account for a 4% increase in assist percentage. You were making claims Green has made no improvements. His improvements in pnr ball handling, over all ball handling, passing, getting to the line etc are all aspects he improved on. Having a shooting slump doesn't magically erase those improvements.
Also you aren't giving him credit for it by dismissing what you are allegedly giving him credit for in the next sentence. Here's a exercise. Compliment Green on something besides "pocket passing" without a "but" or any qualifier. Try it. It won't kill you.
This is an issue debating you. You just completely ignore aspects of your argument you made just a few comments earlier. It's a lot of moving goal posts. You made an explicit claims that Green's slump in the past month of play is evidence that he isn't a hard worker. That was your claim. Now he has improved on things like ball handling, pnr playamking, getting to the line. A shooting slump doesn't erase those things. And a shooting slump especially for a player his age with his lack of experience can precisely be from him working hard such as doing too much weight training after and before games or trying to constantly adjust his shooting mechanics to perfect them. All these things can make a hard working player have a shooting slump. What Green has regressed in the past few weeks is his shot selection though. That is where we can have sincere genuine convos about a severe concern of Green. It seems like when Green is shooting poorly from outside, he's being coached to keep on taking them rather than getting closer and adding more mid range and more driving to the rim. He's taking way too many threes.
Yeah, I don’t think you know what assist % means so I suggest you go look it up. Hint: it’s not a “rate”.
Have some sympathy for him, he's dug in making excuses for a terrible player, it has gotten increasingly difficult for him.... and it'll probably just get harder going forward.
It absolutely is a rate. Because it is a ratio that takes into account turnovers and fga. So if your theory was accurate that mere higher usage would improve his assist rate regardless of worse or better efficiency then turnovers and fga wouldn't be factored. If Green's higher assist totals were a result of merely having the ball more, assist rate would account for that by showing that his turnovers and fga are outpacing his assists. Assist rate by it's formula shows that merely increasing usage rate doesn't magically increase assist rate because it accounts for if the player is commiting more turnovers and more fga with his added possessions. The ratio has fga and turnovers in the denominator, hence a rate. And increased usage would reflect that as more usage means more turnovers and higher fga. I don't feel like debating someone more who can't acknowledge they don't understand basic math principles like rates and ratios.
I have no idea what you are talking about because there is no turnover stat in any of the calculations. AST% - Assist Percentage (available since the 1964-65 season in the NBA); the formula is 100 * AST / (((MP / (Tm MP / 5)) * Tm FG) - FG). Assist percentage is an estimate of the percentage of teammate field goals a player assisted while he was on the floor.
Okay? How do we qualify this hypothetical? What make you say that? And who have you heard say that? I can at least pick t to non Rocket fan analysts for my takes.
Did not follow the whole discussion but here are my 2 cents on the stats: Ast % is directly a function of number of assists made, which depends on your role(usage is not the right place to look at) and your capacity to make assists. Usually these go hand in hand, players who are capable of making assists are put into roles to make assists. After all this is in the best interest of the team. So you can use the stat as a measure of playmaking ability. But in the world of Silas, it does not work like that. KPJ is put into a role to make the assists, Sengun and Green are not. So Sengun's and Green's assist % are not really indicators of their playmaking ability. If Sengun continues to have this new role, his assist % will go up significantly. Also his assist/to because he will have significantly more chances to make assists, without actually handling the ball that much more, so his turnovers will not go up at the same rate. Similarly if Green is given a role more similar to KPJ's, his assist % is going to go up. His assist/to not so much due to this role change, because the new role will come with more ball handling, more prone to turnovers. So if his ast/to rate is going up, I would attribute it to getting better at either making assists or turning the ball over less. The to stats will tell us which one it is, or if it is both.
I like you. You are one of the few Sengun fans who actually doesn't put down other players around him to prop him up. @CXbby , take notes from this guy.
