I guess you mean it will appear to improve.

In reality his defense will take another year or two to significantly improve and that's fine. That's normal for big men to take 2-3 years to fully understand what it takes to anchor a defense with their strengths/limitations. Everyone is in such a rush, but he's on track at an average pace which is just perfect for us.

The way you describe it makes it sound like some grand agenda against Sengun but there are two key points at play here that are undeniably true.

1- The rookie whistle is real. Rookies especially, but young players in general, get bad calls. Refs tell them they “have to earn it” or some other nonsense. This is a horrible part of nba basketball but it is true.

2- The superstar whistle is real. Again, nothing to do with Sengun specifically, but players have been getting “all star calls” for decades. Much like point #1 it is verified true by nba referees. This is also a horrible part of nba basketball but it’s real.

Sengun has gotten some terrible calls due to point 1, or a combination of the fact that he’s trying to guard superstars, which brings point 2 into play. I hope he can one day ascend to superstardom and become the beneficiary of point 2 as he ages out of point 1.

Respect from refs is the part I’m talking about. The other parts are improvement from himself and fitting a roster around him. For instance, Jaren Jackson Jr averages 3 blocks a game from the PF spot and anchors the #1 defense in the league next to a slow center who doesn’t block shots. There are others around the league like him (Jonathan Isaac?) which would be ideal fits around Sengun. Or perhaps Jabari develops into it or we draft Wemby?

Yes, this is exactly what I’m saying. Perhaps not superstardom but at least stardom is good enough to say least get a fair or even beneficial whistle vs a horrible whistle now.

    BEAUTIFUL
btw more playing time also means better rhythm and flow equals better timing equals better defense. And also with more experience comes even better defense.
OTH dont get me even started on the concept of
the best defense is the offense!

I dont think you will ever be a 'good' talent evaluator or 'good' nba analyst but that's ok, nba basketball is complex and you can easily hide your weaknesses by writing less often or checking with me before posting.

Also when your coach doesn't respect you what can you expect from the refs?

So we can apply that same concept to Green who also is in his second year? Does that mean he's going to be leading the league in ftr when the refs start respecting him because refs now seem to unwillingly blow the whistle for Green because of how explosively he gets to the paint. Eventually Green will also get the easy calls that veteran players get also.

his defense is going to magically improve the moment we stop starting 3 guards who are all defensive sieves.

So Sengun fans have no concept about personal responsibility?

People who lokke Green acknowledge his faults right now.

good lord the discourse on this forum is becoming abysmal. anyone that has a different opinion has to be a "only fan" now.

im a fan of the houston rockets.

I can only go by what you post. So no personal responsibility for Sengun?

sure theres personal responsbility. but when you have 3 traffic cones on the perimeter, i don't see anyone excelling in that environment.

Don't our guards have the highest individual defensive stats like opposing fg? I remember posters posting that infographic here.

So again, it seems like you are telling me Sengun should have personal responsibility but not showing it by still deflecting his responsibilities.

Sengun could become a good team defender. He could be a wall and hold a player while Jabari comes over the top and blocks the shot

Yes? I don't know why you say this so condescendingly. The obvious answer here is yes, if Jalen gets to an allstar/superstar level, his free throw rate will go up and he will get more calls. I think if he hits that level then it is very likely he will lead the league in free throws.
