This is why I don't get the DeMeco hype. I know he's a popular ex-Texan who is also a great DC, but this team needs more than just a feel good hire. We need an offensive-minded up and comer who can grow with our (hopefully) new QB. Personally, I'm on the Ben Johnson bandwagon. But when it all comes down to it, I'd be okay with any of these candidates. I just have a sneaky suspicion the Texans are going to somehow miss out on all of them. That's just the Texan way. Man, I hope I'm wrong.
I’m wondering how his & Sean Payton’s relationship is. There’s no denying he’d be a good weapon to have for whatever rookie QB we bring in. I’d have to think any HC we bring in would try to mend the relationship. Also would be more than happy to get a 2nd/early 3rd for him at this point.
This is how I feel. I'm expecting the Gannon guy to be hired and some tight ends coach who's never called plays or designed an offense to be the OC and some guy Gannon went to college with to be the QB coach.
While I agree on getting an offensive coach just from the value of having continuity instead of losing your genius OC every year, I'd point out that defensive coaches have had a ton of success too. Belichick, Tomlin, and Harbaugh are the longest tenured coaches, have a variety of superbowl wins and appearances, and all have defensive backgrounds. Along with Reid, they are the 4 current NFL coaches who've really managed sustained long-term success.
Prefer an offensive mind but not sure about Payton. However If he is the guy there's NO WAY ITW I'm giving up our #12 this year! Overpay. And no way I'm giving away the CLE. #1 next year either. No telling if they might not just implode to a top 7-ish pick or so. We have the 2nd pick in the 2nd round this year. That's VERY CLOSE to a late 1st by itself. I say we offer them our 2nd and a 6th this year and a 4th next year. That's 3 picks total that's easily equivalent to a late 1st. If that's not good enough oh well! Payton is friends with Loomis though so hopefully he will accept it as IT DOES meet his minimum criteria in draft value!
Here's a compromise I can see happen. The Texans trade the #12 pick and swap down with a team in the 20s (most likely a good team) plus one of their a future first next year. Texans then trade the swapped pick this year for Payton. This fulfills the Saints demand of a low 1st at least for Payton, and Texans mitigate the lost of #12 with a future first.
Why would the Saints go for this? If they know the Texans really want Payton, they can say #12 pick or nothing. Unless Payton is ONLY willing to coach the Texans (unlikely), then they can just get someone else to pay more.
Caserio wanted to hire Gannon not McCown. Do you think Culley is happy that he took the job while he's sitting on a cool 21 mil at 65 years old? That's a lot more than he's made in his previous 30 years combined. Sign me up for that.
This is what waiting to hire a HC is going to get the Texans. The ability to build a great staff most likely will be gone by the time they get around to interviewing everybody.
Ofc that scenario is dependent on Payton wanting to come here, and Texans unwilling to trade #12 straight up.
Indeed, if they take a long time to move on a HC they are going to have a bad staff again. I'm hoping all the "deliberateness" talk is just hype and they'll move quickly on their guy. If it takes a long time then Caserio needs to be fired. It will be indicative that he is indeed a huge problem when it comes to HC hiring because he takes too long.
What makes it even more ridiculous if this happens is that the Texans knew months ago they were going to looking for a HC, so they've had plenty of time to evaluate everyone. If they are waiting because they want one of the coordinators still in the playoffs, that's completely acceptable. But if they drag this out and then get the Detroit OC or whatnot, it will be self-sabotage (or everyone they wanted saying no, which is frankly pretty realistic).
