Those names don’t really excite me, although Brown has an excellent scouting/drafting resume. Not at all excited to get a guy who already got fired from a top notch Org (Evans) or a guy who failed over a long period in a loser organization (Hill).
Sign me up for anyone who has been with the Braves in recent years and has had a ton of success drafting legit quality and star level players. Brown would be more than ok with me. Interested to see who else they interview.
Astros should sign whoever is the contract-whisperer with the Braves that gets everyone to sign long-term extensions.
Agree. No knowledge of the person, but the Braves have had good drafting success. Seems well liked there.
Dana Brown is the only one of those 3 that even remotely makes sense. I don't want a yes man. Obviously need a good working relationship, but you hire the GM to make these decisions.
What? Betts arb salaries: 2018: $10.5M 2019: $20M 2020: $27M How is that going down? FYI he beat Boston in 18 then settled without a hearing the next 2 years
Brown is at least intriguing. The other two, yuck. Seems likely at this point that the resume of the new GM will not be on par with Click’s when he was hired.
George Springer would also be a good comp. He got $3.9M, then we agreed to give him $12M for year 2 & 3, and he got $21M in year 4. He never actually made it to arbitration, but reasonable salaries to work with.
Yes, however the organization each came from are completely different. Both draft well, but the Braves don’t take the extreme money all type approach the Rays do. The Braves have shown a willingness to make the big trade and lock up guys with big contracts. The Rays have never shown a willingness to do either of those. With Brown the hope would be you’re getting a guys who’s a supreme talent evaluator and has also been exposed to an organization who’s willing to “go for it” with big moves. That seems to be what Crane is after.
Crane had an opportunity to make a “big move” this off-season unshackled from Click and he proceeded to make the same moves Click probably would have made. I don’t the personality conflict between them necessarily centered on aggressiveness in spending, signing, and trading. It might have simply been personal, or it might have dealt with the degree of control Click was willing to cede to Crane and his buddies in running the org.
Whether it was the biggest thing, I don't know, but it seemed to be a big part. I don't think Click was against spending, I think he was for spending for value than for flash. It looks like Crane got addicted to the big, flashy trades, but that when push comes to shove, he's still conservative with years in free agency.
Agreed, and perhaps I’m misstating things. It’s not so much listen to the owner and do what he says, but ideally there is better alignment philosophically about spending, while allowing for room for push back.
I wonder if Houston has called on Iann Happ? I honestly think we have the pieces to aquire this guy and lock him in at CF. Meyers Maton Blanco and some prospects could land this player I believe.
the braves have locked up elite players on early long term deals, and philosophically that lines up with the Astros approach, Hell, they are the envy of the league when it comes to that.
I don’t think Click would have been an early mover on Abreu. It’s more likely he would have waited for “value” to emerge, and when Abreu came off the market, maybe he ends up with Bell on the shorter deal.
There were three obvious FA targets for the Astros, and one of them had a QO attached. He would have signed one of Abreu or Bell, and the difference between them is pretty marginal and neither would be deemed a big or flashy signing. Indeed, the Astros have preserved a lot of financial flexibility as we near ST.
