Alvarez signed his extension in the middle of the season 2022 salary was already determined and half earned.
Found it on Cot's. 6/3/22. But it does mean anyone can be extended without changing the existing contract. I wonder if it would include Alvarez since his contract starts with the "championship season" which is legalese for regular season. Extend him a year at a time? 2029?
Just the settlement amounts I could find for comparables for Tucker. Astros propose $5M, Tucker's team $7.5M. Name Age WAR(22) WAR(career) Amount($ Millions) Josh Naylor 26 1.80 2.00 $3.4 Mike Yastremski 32 1.80 9.50 $6.1 Will Smith 28 4.20 10.80 $5.3 Kyle Tucker 26 5.20 12.80 Tommy Edman 28 6.40 15.30 $4.2 If you're in Tucker's camp you emphasize Yastremski's settlement. If you're in the Astros camp, you emphasize Edman's and Smith's settlements. The reason this is so important is the tendency to reward future good seasons based on previous years earnings rather than independently in arbitration. Note the comment after Framber's settlement about the "increase" for a non Cy Young winner going into his second arb year. And future arb tends to be about how big of an increase, even after a poor year. I do not recall a single reduction, though it might have happened.
Do the arb negotiations have no impact on extension negotiations? Hard to envision the Astros agreeing to an extension with Javier if they are nickel and dime’ing him over his salary for next season, but perhaps the two issues are unrelated.
Why argue with Javier over 500K, especially as 3.5 is reasonable? I wonder if they are working on an extension and didn’t want to sign before?
This strikes me as absurd if the Astros have any interest in keeping him longer term. 500k is a small price to pay to make a player and his agent happy and not have to try to tear him down in an arbitration hearing. Edit: Even more ridiculous when you just gave Urquidy $3MM too and both are the same point in their arbitration cycles.
He’ll spend if he thinks it’s in his business interest to do so but not a buck more. He’s very shrewd, but possibly also a touch arrogant. Edit: another thing that annoys me about Crane is the way he treats some of his high level employees.
Arbitration salaries are directly related to future arbitration numbers for the player and league wide. The owners collectively benefit from keeping arbitration salaries down as much as possible. Just like minor league slave wages, the league can easily afford to pay them respectably, but if you can get away with it then you do, at least that's the greedy billionaire mindset. I don't like it, but virtually every team in the league ends up arguing over seemingly inconsequential arbitration disagreements to maintain the big picture of keeping salaries down. Fans will of course b**** when the tables turn and the players are In the position to demand as much as they can get.
