He was hands on last year. That was the problem. Nick wanted Gannon.

No Dusty was coming back unless they lost early in the playoffs. Click was gone no matter what.

And he said he's going to be even more hands on this year... so why should this year be any different by this logic?

Well, the public narrative that's being expounded over the airwaves is that ALL of the disfunction for the last two seasons is because of Jack Easterby, the incompetent (Black) head coaches and Brandon Cooks all of which served to sabotage Nick's efforts. Poor Nick is simply not to blame at all and he has been humbled by the results of the past two years and vows to work harder (read more hands on) this time around. And this is reason why things are going to be different this time around.

Who did you want them to hire?

There weren't a lot of great options. The job wasn't very attractive.

I hated the Lovie hire, btw.

Nothing will get better until the head of the snake (Cal) sells the team. From now until the future, the only way the Texans will become good is due to getting lucky and fluking into a good coach/GM/talented players. There will be no sustained periods of success, that's for sure. 1-2 seasons of good play followed by being bad again for ____ years. We are the Detroit Lions

There are always options - literally anyone with any semblance of upside is better than any coach who has no future. If you hire a Nathanial Hackett and have to ultimately fire him, you can say you just didn't know what you were getting and it didn't work out. No one will think you're a garbage organization. But if you hire Lovie, that nonsense doesn't work - he did exactly what you should have expected him to do. There are 32 OCs and 32 DCs around the league, most of whom are hoping to be head coaches one day. Pick one and maybe they surprise you. But you also have to put them in a position to succeed or fail on their own merits - ie, let them pick their own staff and philosophy. If it doesn't work, at least you tried. Instead, the Texans hired a WR coach who never was on any kind of HC path in a 30 year career, and then a DC who likely had no real aspirations or expectations of being a HC again.

The Texans were never going to get the hottest HC candidate, and they still won't. They weren't going to get the 4th or 5th hottest candidate either. But they could have gotten the 10th or 15th. Instead, they went and got like the 80th and 300th.

Exactly, they should have hired a white coach so people didn't accuse them of being racist.

The reason David Culley was chosen as the HC when he was is bc he's was an unqualified and WILLING to take the job, not bc he was black. HE GLADLY TOOK IT AND IS QUITE HAPPY WITH HIMSELF.

The reason Lovie Smith was chosen is bc they are ****ing idiots who thought at best Lovie could hold down the fort for a couple of years. The reason he wasn't a long term solution is bc he's ****ing old and past his prime. The reason he wasn't a long term solution is not because he is black, it's bc he's stuck in mid-90s football.

Just like the reason Demeco Ryans is a terrific HC option is bc he's smart, qualified AF, knows modern defense, and has all the IT qualities of being a HC.

All of this stuff is just complete nonsense but I'm not surprised at all.

Left side of mouth: "nobody will take this trash job from this trash organization."

Right side of mouth: "there are always options"

The question is - if McCown was hired 2 seasons ago.. would he be fired or still here?

If the answer is still here (then that speaks for itself)

Dusty is Kerr taking over for Mark Jackson

    or

If Lovie took over Eagles or Chiefs .. he would be in playoffs right now

Excellent analysis. And might I add that Nick was hired by Cal and Jack against the recommendations of the search committee (which they paid over $600K). To my knowledge Caserio wasn't even on the radar for any of the GM openings at the time. So the narrative that he's not responsible for hiring Cully and Smith is simply a lie to provide CYA for Nick's ass. He's been in complete control of football operations from day one. He's played the Texans and their fans for two years now and will continue to do so because Cal McNair is a complete buffoon.

They’re in a no win position at this point. I just hope they legitimately get the best candidate for THIS job, for THIS team. No matter whom they select they will be overly scrutinized, more so than other teams whom are undergoing this same hiring process unfortunately.

And FWIW, I’m not advocating that some of the scrutiny isn’t justified. They brought some of this upon themselves by giving BOB too much team control, hiring Culley, someone whom when we look back simply wasn’t qualified to be a HC to begin with. The rest has been a snowball effect.

It's interesting that you have to make up people's views to make your argument. The Texans will get the last of the options available. But there are a lot of those kinds of candidates below the Brian Daboll or Mike McDaniel tier but higher than Lovie Smith or David Culley tier. This isn't that complicated.

    Fixed it for u.

A person worth their salt won't sully their reputation by taking this sht job b/c any chance of success is uber low.

Folks who r desperate enough will take this job since only 32 position exists.

    Common sense.

Feel free to be concerned, but the things I know/assume he’s responsible for - drafts, Watson trade, cap management, analytic approach and just knowledge of the game in general - have not been moronic. The thing that I don’t know who’s responsible for with the Texans (and if someone claims to know they’re most likely lying) - the coaching hires - may without a doubt not inspire confidence. However, it doesn’t bother me one bit IF they end up with a good one this time. Coaches don’t count against the salary cap, so pay as many as you want as long as you end up with the right one. Needless to say I don’t buy into the racist narrative.

the funny thing about ranking is that they can b updated, nothing is set in stone. Lovie is a relic, his coaching chop is outdated, if u were to rank him on competency, man would b near the bottom.

Major has a valid point, would you want Trent Dilfer to be your QB, Afterall he won a Super Bowl. Lovie has been horrible 95% of his career, the job he did at Illinois was horrible. I am sure he is a fine coach with a good defensive mind but that doesn't always translate to an excellent HC.......hell, I have great guys at my job who are fantastic at what they do but move them up to a position of authority and they fail miserably

Lovie was 17-39 at Illinois and was 92-100 in the NFL........he was a bad hire, just another recycled coach who never gets anything done. In the words of Lovie "sometimes divorce is a good thing"

What guys who against Lovie love to leave out is he was our DC … the Texans begged him to save their ass and accept the HC position and he was paid handsomely for it.

If they would of treated him like they did Romeo, we would still have #1 pick but Nick is an ******* who is horrible with relationships

Y’all act like Lovie was expected to win - the Texans was expected to be a bottom 3 team before last season started … but act like our defense didn’t improve the last 2 years … they just got gashed alot because the offense was nonexistent.
