So this upsets the republicans more than Gaetz being a pedophile? Strange.

That this is going on today of all days and with this theatre in the House going on largely due to a small group of "deniers" is way past bizarre.

Apparently, McCarthy just sold his soul and became Speaker of the House.

Kevin McCarthy received 216 votes and Hakeem Jefferies garnered 212. By a margin of 4 votes, McCarthy is elected Speaker of the House of Representatives. It's over and it's begun.

    Kevin McCarthy becomes the speaker!

What an amazing display of a healthy democracy!

    Well done Republicans!

Biden should order the treasury to still send checks after the MAGA house blows up the debt ceiling.

The constitution clearly states that the US will not default on its debt and if I was Biden I would use that to take it to SCOTUS. Make sure it’s crystal clear to the voters in 24 who was responsible for crashing the economy.

Ron klain who's biden COS liked Matt's post about this

It's a win win situation. If Republicans push for Medicare cuts (which they are) for a debt ceiling then biden will challenge Republicans. If Republicans don't cave they'll get the treasury to just keep printing money and claim its already appropriated (which the money is from the omnibus) and the debt ceiling is a fake mechanism that was artificially created.

Then a republican state will sue the treasury and it'll likely go to the Supreme Court in which they'll side with the government as they don't wsnt to be responsible for destroying America's economy. The Supreme Court ALWAYS rules for the executive branch in these situations.

It's a win win situation for democrats. Sit back and showcase the utter insanity of the Republicans. You're going see a Speakership vote every month when one of these bozos gets upset.

took 15 tries but speaker was finally chosen.

Not really a good example of democracy

Folks were just holding the country hostage until, McCarthy was voted speaker.

The result was already a given, a forced outcome under the pretense of "voting"

Amazing to me if the Republicans go after cuts to Medicare and SS. Do they not understand the majority of their base would be completely indigent without those programs?

Democrats need to spend the next 2 years capturing all the quotes they can and then blast them in 2024.

Your post contradicts itself. You knew this was going to be a disaster for America, yet you "took pleasure" in it because it's "good for all of us"? OK.

How is it "good for all of us" that the GOP has now lurched even further into wacko territory and people like Jim Jordan have a tighter grip on the wheel?

One vote to call the speaker into question.

I dunno, perhaps I'm jaded. My experience during this was that as a liberal suggesting this was not something to cheer/celebrate got you sent to the shadowrealm, whereas everyone else was happy to act like this was somehow the death of the GOP in action. I don't count most posters here among the room temperature IQ doofuses who fall into that camp, but we all travel in some very different online political circles. My observation so far has been "LOL, Hakeem Jefferies is getting more votes, the GOP is self-destructing, pass the koolaid, hail Nancy!".

Opinions about 'crypto' aside, it's typically a good day for them whenever the money printers go brrrrrrrrrr.

The "losers" comment is directed largely at the weak-willed progressives in the Democratic party, although Democrats as a whole could stand to learn a lesson about power here too.

Take note of how just a handful of people in the GOP are completely reshaping Congress.

If we had even just a handful of like-minded folks on the left, we would all be better for it.

Maybe they'll **** around and find out the way they did with the Dobbs decision.

The GOP seems hellbent on going after 3rd rails.

Perhaps that's the only way forward... the GOP has to make things so bad for this country that there's a groundswell to push back with major, permanent reforms.

Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. It feels like one of those times.

It’s Hakeem “the zombie” Jeffries and not Joaquim.

They are going to compromise - seniors would not be impacted. The poor, weak, and handicapped - good luck. IOW, they will message this as saving SS & Medicare for Senior. For those that deserve it (that paid taxes into it). To strip out all freeloaders so America is truly great again.

But they will fail to realize how much that still impact their base. It's ok though - there is always legalized cheating and blind party loyalty to maintain power.

It’s definitely Hakeem. Not sure how I managed that. However it’s Hakeem “future Speaker of the House” Jeffries.
