question... if we kept Ego until the end of the year... would we still have him 'under contract' - last year is not guaranteed, so basically club option at 21M, right? just thinkin... if an opportunity came up to trade for anybody on a decent contract in the off season - would we even have contracts to send back? we dont have many high dollar contracts... but Ego would be a 21M expiring...? Could we go into the off season with Egos 21M contract to potentially use for contract matching in a trade - but then still be able to denounce the last year if we dont find a deal?

No, that's not how his contract is s structured. To trigger the final year, one of two things have to happen: EG makes the all star team. OR The Rockets win the championship & EG has to play at least 500 minutes in the regular season & 750 regular season and playoff minutes combined. You can't kick this can down the road. I think it's understandable that they didn't want another pick in last years draft after adding 4 the year before and two more in that draft. It's hard to find minutes for that many young guys & first round picks are guaranteed money. They wanted a "future pick" (24 or beyond) and couldn't get it, teams didn't want to give up picks in the 24 draft which is supposed to be a double talent draft with players again eligible right out of high school. It was easy, the way EG was playing last year, to tell yourself: "hey, I can't get what I want right now, I can kick the can down the road a year and get it then." Assuming EG is healthy, even if there was some regression, you wouldn't expect him to be playing this bad. The other issue is the size of his contract, it's difficult to match because it's between the max and the mid level exception ..... there are very few individual contracts that can be exchanged one for one. That means the Rockets have to punt on a player they would prefer to see develop just to make a roster spot to take back a 2 for 2 trade (or 3/3). I don't believe they were willing to do that last season, they wanted to get a good look at each of their young players. Combine that with not wanting another pick, that you would struggle to find minutes for and his guaranteed contract in last year's draft .... and it's completely understandable why they didn't move EG last year. If it had been me in Stone's position, I think I'd have taken the best deal out there and tried to trade that pick for a pick in a later draft or if there was a particularly intriguing prospect, take him and dump one of our marginal talents.

The other hindrance has likely been long-term money attached to a FRP. I’m sure that the Rockets could have dealt him for a FRP if they were willing to take a contract like Evan Fournier back. When Stone was saying FRPs were offered last year, I’m sure that’s the type of offers he was getting.
But how do you make the salaries work? The Rockets would have to take back salary beyond this year in order to match Gordon’s salary. That’s the holdup. I’m sure Gordon for Fournier+Reddish is on the table right now.
I'm almost certain this is how it was ..... any pick for EG last year came with something we didn't want in return. If that was in the form of contracts that expired next year, that's not so terrible ..... but if it went beyond that, it didn't allow you to spend your cap space on free agents before having to make decisions on Green, Sengun, Garuba & Christopher .... in that case, the returning contract is too toxic to take. It's critical that you are able to supplement your roster with FA's before having to extend last year's rookies who you can exceed the cap to extend.... It wasn't so simple as "here's a first round pick" and most of the negativity over this is believing that it was so simple .... Here's a #1 with no complications.

Not arguing - just looking for clarification... usually if its nonguaranteed - its a team option...
Excellent writing by the author. Acquiring Turner for Gordon and an asset we don't have seems pretty lazy at best.
Feeling generous so I'll attempt to fix for him; maybe the author meant the Milwaukee pick. Now we have 5 centers and another trade will need to be made to balance out the roster. Also, Rockets have to really, really want Turner cause they could wait for him in free agency with more cap space than any other team. I like Turner but adding him now puts Sengun right back in the same spot before Christian Wood trade to Dallas. I'd rather at least give Sengun a full season as starter before making any decisions to further upgrade the position.

What if he make Sengun a Power Forward and Turner as a Center or Sengun as a Center and Turner as a Power Forward. Turner can live on the 3 point line with Sengun on the block. Love Sengun. Can't see how he is anything but a C in the NBA. Just hasn't got the range to hit the corner 3 Doesn't have the agility to guard the perimeter. While your scenario addresses the first concern, it doesn't help with the second, because switching Turner to the perimeter undercuts his major value of rim protection.
Raptors seem to be slumping, if they go in the direction of a re-tool or partial rebuild I would try for Van Vleet. He's a great vet to have distributing the ball and teaching the team winning habits. Good defender, usually a good shooter too. Don't mind eating into our cap space for one summer, I think especially with us trying to make the playoffs next season it will be time to bring more structure and discipline to the team. Is there a better way to roll over the cap space this summer? Better than trying to get a late first rounder. If he's up for a reasonable extension and he's healthy, would sign him to a contract if I thought it's easily tradable. CP3 type role. Don't want to get stuck with a bad contract though, can't f*ck up our flexibility. Unfortunately it may severely hamper the tanking effort, so unless we rest him for 20-30 games (which he may actually need, has had nagging injuries) I don't think it's realistic. Fun to think about FVV being vocal on defense and feeding Green, Sengun, Jabari on offense.
