He willingly drives into double and triple teams all the time and then usually forced up a bad, contested shot.
Seeing that stat line up above makes me wonder if they are tracking it based on driving into two or three defenders vs having two defenders double you at the top of the key. I definitely think he leads the league in driving recklessly into the paint with 2 or 3 defenders all of you. That's NOT what I would refer to as a "Double Team" in which your team can effectively get open shots off of. If anything that's low percentage stupid decision making as a scorer. IMO the "Head Honcho" label can only really be associated with a primary playmaker or post up player (nearly extinct) that gets doubled early, and can facilitate open shots out of the double. All great playmakers have that ability as the "Head Honcho."
I know, it was a tongue in cheek joke. I do wonder what defenders think when this happens multiple times a game though. "Does he not see us or does he think we are that bad at defense?!"
The really ulcer inducing ones are when he gets a good pick to lose his man, then dribbles back into both defenders.
I honestly do not remember seeing him being double teamed in the normal sense. Usually two types of players are double teamed. (1) Dominant post players get doubled up down low. (2) Elite scorer-playmakers get double teamed because opponents want to keep the ball out of their hands. It makes sense to double players like Harden, Doncic, Jokic, Embiid, etc. It makes no sense to double team a guy like KPJ. Driving to the basket and getting challenged by multiple help defenders is not being double teamed.
What about voluntarily driving into an area that already has multiple defenders? They certainly aren't collapsing on him to challenge.
Tilman claimed KPJ on his taxes the past 2 years. KPJ is clearly taking a shot at the man.. Read between the lines..
Well, KPJ frequently doesn't even *begin* initiating offensive sets until 12 seconds into the shot clock, in which case it makes all kinds of sense to send a double team at him when the clock ticks down. The other issue is - rather hilariously, IMO - whenever Garuba sets a high screen - it's pretty much "free double" because between his nonexistent offensive ability and the Rockets guards shitty passing - he can safely be ignored.
I don't understand this mindset. I don't know many fans saying they are better at KPJ as a basketball player. KPJ could destroy me a billion times out of a billion when it comes to hoops, but this is a professional team. People pay to watch this.
I would absolutely pay $$$ to see Clutch or any of us play against KPJ or any current or past Rockets Legend.
Yes, you said he sucks on D, no argument there, far from it, but this isn't leadership. It's showboating at the worst possible time, in my opinion, at the end of a badly played game by most of the team that we are obviously going to lose. Instead of setting an example and busting his butt on defense without looking to see if he hit the trey, Porter is posing for statue, and not for the Louvre in Paris. As Jackson Gatlin accurately described it, this is just unacceptable.
If your best defense is “well he’s better at basketball than a bunch of 40 year old dads” then that’s not a great defense. Like yeah… he’s supposed to be better at basketball than average NBA fans. That’s kind of the point of us being fans. Plus absolutely nobody is saying he’s a bad NBA player. Only that he’s not in the right role as “Head Honcho” primary playmaker. He’s still starter or 6th man quality talent. It’s more of a criticism of the front office and coaching staff than of KPJ himself who has been setup to fail in his role in many ways.
I for one would want to separate the 'head honcho' talk from what is actually unfolding. This is a big PR mess, the thing is the NBA world doesn't really care about the Rockets and this team being potentially dysfunctional.
You’re right but I just feel he gets so much unnecessary hate it’s not his fault he’s playing out of position
