MCcarthy is going to end up conceding everything where he can't get anything done because he`s promised everything to everyone. Why in the hell does he even want this job, at some point someone will blink, and I think its Mccarthy who will give away the farm to be elected and then the first sign of trouble they will boot him out. The one thing I do like about this is the split between MTG team and Gaetz team, I hope they don't recover from this

Except that this is an extreme example of how the failure of one branch of government has led to the empowerment of another branch. If you’re a conservative yes you don’t want big government but part of that was that the other branches effectively check each other. The failure of the legislative branch to actually get organized and do things like legislate just means the executive branch has gotten so much more powerful. This is why Presidents of both parties have been able to use so Executive orders and to get things done and also why the Judicial branch rulings are so powerful because the Legislative branch is the least organized and effective branch of government.

That’s not what the Founders envisioned. If anything the Legislative branch should be the most effective branch of government. So from a conservative point of view , emphasis small “c”, yes government shouldn’t be doing a lot but just hamstringing one branch doesn’t accomplish that. It just means the other branches get more powerful in ways that the Founders didn’t envision or worried about.

Probably - but then you just sow more discord within the GOP. As it is now, this will get resolved eventually and it's not going to be good for the Dems if the GOP concedes more and more power to the crazies.

Really, if the Dems could rally around a moderate GOPer, you only need to find 5 GOPers that hate the crazy-right to pull off an upset. It's too bad Kinzinger and Cheney are gone.

I'm reading through some of the concessions Kevin is willing to make that were published in the NYT this morning and I asked myself how this would be good for the democrats. I'm concerned that we would end up defaulting due to the crazies not wanting to push through any spending bills or upping the ceiling, etc.

It's very unlikely. The REPs mainstream (with their leader) would need to approach the DEMs and since they would likely be out of power in the next primary, I'm highly doubtful that they would do that. Perhaps McCarthy (or another GOP leader) has that skillset, but no one has shown any so far.

This is a natural result of placating the extreme right-wing by the more moderate Republicans and Republican leaders. There is nothing illegal or undemocratic going on here and sometimes, you have no option but to let the consequences of the election play out. Adults in the room can only do so much to move the ship forward.

Has anyone actually listened to what the never Kevins say they want? I've heard three interviews and they all said they want to end omnibus spending bills and not have to vote on thousand page bills within hours of them being proposed. The fact that both right and left leaning news organizations are calling them out makes me think they might actually be fighting for something worthwhile.
It seems corporate media likes huge spending bills that no one reads before its voted on.

McCarthy was against the omnibus bill.

If the last Congress waited until this Congress to pass a similar bill (or smaller versions of it), we would be in trouble now. We would be talking about the US defaulting on its debt obligation. Although it would give them a negotiation advantage, Republicans didn't trust the new House to be able to do that.

At least some of the never Kevins have said they would risk default (or maybe even want it).

I think intention in this case matters. Yes in a perfect world, every bill would have it's opportunity to go through the process of debate, and consensus voting.

However this is very naïve and would lead to literally nothing getting done... including not being able to fund the government.

Take for instance the electoral count bill that helps secure the process for which the Jan 6 insurrectionists were trying to stage a coup under the previous pretense that people like John Eastman were trying to exploit. Had the House AND Senate under normal bill passing measures given this bill by itself the normal process for passing that a new bill like the ACA or Build Back Better got, that would have hung up both the Senate and House for months. Given the fact that the Jan 6 committee didn't even release their report until two weeks ago, and the fact that the new Congress was to be sworn in two days ago, they didn't have enough time to both fund the government for a year, and pass this bill.

So in the end what people like Chip Roy are trying to sell to us sounds nice theoretically, but in the end, what they are trying to impose is utter and complete chaos. They are either ignorant themselves, or just acting in bad faith to try and impose chaos of Congress by re-writing the rules like this.

I found a section deep in an article that references one of the interviews I watched. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/05/politics/mccarthy-desperation-speaker-analysis/index.html

Often, multiple funding bills on everything from farming to defense and transportation to space are lumped together in massive end-of-year omnibus bills like the mammoth $1.7 trillion spending package that Congress finally passed in December. Multiple Republican members appeared on CNN on Wednesday making reasoned arguments about the need to mend a broken institution, to open the House’s business to the public and to conduct a proper appropriations process through committees with time for full debates, budget assessments and amendments.

“I really think this is democracy in action,” North Carolina Republican Rep. Dan Bishop told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “If you are not satisfied with Washington as it is, then you can’t just be satisfied doing the same thing.”
Massive $1.7 trillion bills written by lobbyists that no one has time to read is not how government is supposed to work. I would rather the debate happen now and have the media report on it honestly than to kick this down the road until another shut down / bad spending bill happens.

It's shameful in so many ways how Abbott and the Texas GOP care so little about what really matters and cater to giving tax breaks to the corporate billionaires. How has that worked out?

Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, Wisconsin, and Minnesota generally provide more access to insurance and mental healthcare.

Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi fall on the other side of that spectrum, providing the least access.

    https://www.mdlinx.com/article/best...-and-healthcare-access/3i4sbkAQ7rEboHuft0hLXa

Texas ranks #1 in those who are uninsured for healthcare.

    https://advisorsmith.com/data/the-most-and-least-uninsured-states-for-health-coverage/?amp=1

Texas rates 45th in the nation in child well-being.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news...nked-best-worst-child-well-being/10277086002/

Texas ranks 12th in child poverty with 20% of children living in poverty. Actually, 11 of the top 12 states with children living in poverty are Red states.

    https://247wallst.com/special-report/2022/05/19/states-where-the-most-children-live-in-poverty/9/

Texas ranks 34th in Education rankings.

There is so much that is wrong with the way these gun loving corporate ass kissers run this state.

Haha, that is not what they actually want.

Nobody actually believes that the wackos, child predators, Putinists and white supremacists are all of a sudden born again as some sort of hardcore Hayek zombies who are very seriously evaluating fiscal and monetary policy in very serious fashion backed by very serious policy studies. First off, that school of thought is pretty discredited, but more importantly, this would require you to basically ignore the last 10 to 20 years of actual behavior and believe the lies of people who quite literally lie and say crazy **** as part of their core mission which is exactly what they say it is - to pwn the libs and flood the zone with bullshit..

    Nobody's that dumb.

My advice for you going forward - when this ******* shows you who he is, believe him.

    derailing...

It wasn't a last min bill. The components of the bills have been in the making for a long time, some as far back as 2021 (the PUMP act). The problem isn't that there isn't debate, amendments (plenty of them), or assessments. It's that Congress waits till the last min to vote on it. Breaking up the bills into smaller components have merit, but the idea that it was simply rushed through and not debated is not correct. Again, there are figures in Congress (extreme MAGA) that is willing to do nothing - they want to see gov die. That's their incentive - to have a completely dysfunctional government. They dressed it up around ugly bills and processes, but they aren't serious about actual good governance and improved process.

Sure that is a good issue but this type of fight isn't what's going to resolve or directly address that issue. This is a frequent argument made by extremists that chaos is good for them no mattter the cause because if you're out of power all you want to do is gum up the works. The problem is that Republicans are supposed to be the majority. If you want to make change just sabotaging things only gets you so far. At somepoint you have to be able to do stuff like pass legislation that changes things.

In this case don't like omnibus spending bills. When you have spending bills propose individual spending bills and get them passed. As another poster noted McCarthy didn't support the last omnibus spending bill so he is certainly amenable to not going that route. Sabotaging him now doesn't guarantee that you will get that. In fact it's possible that McCarthy if he prevails out of picque turns against your issues. Or the nightmare scenario which is still possible for Republicans. Republicans hold back their votes and suddenly Hakeem Jeffries is the next Speaker of the House and get's to dicated committee assignments.

It certainly isn't good for the country to cede more power to the crazies. Gaetz, Jim Jordan, Boebbert, etc.. should have no place in the government. That said they were elected by voters in their districts. They were funded by the RNC and have been supported and protected by other national Republicans.

This isn't the fault of Democrats but the Republicans themselves and their decades long strategy to focus on grievance more than governing. If Democrats bail them out by helping McCarthy or some other "moderate" Republican it will not solve the problem. It will only empower those who go after "RINO's" as much as they do Democrats. In other ways it empowers the crazies even more. This is a fight that many including in their own party have warned was going to happen and the Republicans have to resolve themselves.

I have been predicting this for about 6 months, you just know that these people were going to start looking out for themselves and wanting all the attention.

It's very telling that Boebert and Greene are the ones leading the different factions, there can only be one queen b****.

This is the only thing that can get them views and they don't care about anything else.
