I haven’t watched it but did he blame the Astros for what’s going on in the House and claim they were stealing Kevin McCarthy’s signs?
In fairness, I'm not sure that's really true. for some sure, but the never Kevin group of 5 is really just doing this for chaos. They don't actually want anything.
That’s a tough question. At first review Kevin McCarthy is the lesser of two evils. He hasn’t really espoused craziness, even spoke out against Trump on Jan 6, and seems like he could be a capable administrator. The problem is that through his cravenness he enabled a lot of the craziness that we see in the house. If he wins he’s likely going to be such a very weak speaker that has made a lot of concessions .
Chaos isn’t addressing issues thst Republicans pretend they care about either. If they can’t get organized and elect a speaker they won’t even get to the ability of having hearings.
No Republican Speaker can thrive in the current GOP setup. It's why Boehner and Ryan both quit (and why Ryan didn't want it to begin with.) The GOP in the House is crazytown. They have a segment that is completely 100% propped up by faux outrage and therefore has no interest in governance. In fact they are rewarded more for simply being destructive trolls then they ever would be for passing legislation.
Eventually they will organize and people like Gaetz and Boebert know it. But this performance is good for them financially. They will raise a ton of cash on this and raise their profile with the outrage junkies.
It's actually kind of hilarious. Last time Republicans had the majority it was like a 30 seat cushion and they tanked McCarthy then and had to BEG Paul Ryan to take the speaker's job that he did not want because no one else could win. WITH a THIRTY SEAT MAJORITY. Now it's just 5. LOL
Whatever Happened to the Scandal That Derailed Kevin McCarthy’s Last Bid for Speaker? Rumors of the affair percolated through the conservative blogosphere, and drew more attention when Ellmers (fellow GOP lawmaker / Kevin's rumored lover) made an odd remark about McCarthy failing to ask for her support, saying, “I’m apparently not high on his priority list.” GOP Representative Walter Jones added more fuel to the fire when he issued a letter calling on candidates to withdraw from the race for speaker if “there are any misdeeds he has committed since joining Congress that will embarrass himself, the Republican Conference and the House of Representatives if they become public.” Jones later confirmed that his letter was partly inspired by a blog post he read about McCarthy and Ellmers. McCarthy changed his mind on pursuing the speakership within a matter of hours, making the case for his candidacy at an early morning meeting, then saying he was dropping out by noon.
If his recent endorsements for Lake / Walker are any indication, this could be the kiss of death for McCarthy's pursuit of the speakership. McCarthy’s bid for speaker to continue, Trump urges support
You get both. McCarthy will be the speaker after all this is done. He would have close to no power of an actual speaker, at the whip of the group of MAGA. The House essentially will be under the power of the extreme MAGA wing. Trump didn't split the party, but this did... take that into perspective.
The current Republican party makes a whole lot more sense if you flip your viewpoint. Its not that McCarthy and the like are allowing craziness, but the people who vote in the primaries want crazy and they have to placate them or get primaried by even crazier candidates. In other words, the inmates are running the asylum.
Serious question, is there a reason why we don't talk more about Anna Paulina Luna. She's one of the 20 votes against McCarthy and she's hot. Hotter than Lauren Boebert. Alright that's all I have to contribute. Obligatory picture.
Dems are 100% swamp where GOP is 80% swamp, and the remaining 20% can cause problems with a narrow majority. An intransigent minority can often get their way if they are stubborn enough.
Actually, if the Republican Party had any spine or integrity left, it would denounce and squash this 20%, and make some attempt to govern by pulling back the part of the center that it lost. But it doesn’t and that’s where we are.
Yes there is a lot to that but I think it is a chicken and egg problem. Starting with Nixon the GOP pushed culture wars and they’ve only amplified that even more. How the party got to where it is now has been driven by a GOP establishment that saw cultural and other grievances as a way of breaking up the Democrats hold on the blue collar vote. That opened the way to people like MTG and Jim Jordan into the party and much of the party machinery dominated by people who are more interested in cultural grievance than in governing.
