I agree... just providing context as to why they made the decision they did.

Not a lot of people here thought he'd get 2 years guaranteed, and certainly nobody was advocating the Astros offer that. A lot were speculating that he'd either take a 1 year deal or he'd retire... and now 5+ years later he's still signing deals and pitching.

Luhnow made some great moves. But he also made some moves that didn’t work out too well. Charlie Morton who iced the 2017 World Series should have been re-signed; but he was allowed to walk for nothing.

Charlie figured out his best pitching while with the Astros, and finally reached the lofty expectations he had when he was a top prospect. And the Astros made the mistake to think they had too much pitching and let him walk.

I am of the opinion that With Charlie Morton, the Astros would have won the National’s series. The suck part about it was that Charlie Morton wanted to come back to Houston, but Luhnow thought Charlie was done.

Of the walkaway guys, Morton and Springer are the only ones I feel hurt the team, but Springer MUCH more so (we still haven't solved CF since he left). We never really dropped off as far as starting pitching depth, which is why Morton was allowed to walk in the first place. 2021 WS maybe would have been different bc our starters ran out of gas and Lance got hurt, but I'm not sure 2019 would have turned out differently - we lost that series mainly bc in Games 6 and 7 we could not score and left WAY too many runners on base.

In 2019, our two studs, JV and Cole started four games total on full rest. Cole and JV got spanked their first two starts, Cole recovered in this second start, JV pitched ok in his second but didn't go deep into the game. Our other starters, Grienke and rookie Urquidy, pitched very well. So at least in 2019, Morton would not have made a difference.

That's fine to say in theory, but he posts so much it's hard to fully ignore.

2020 and 2021 may have been different simply because Morton was on the team that beat us each of those years. So not only do you add him to the Astros, you remove him from the opposition. This could go in multiple directions of course - if the Braves don't have Morton, maybe they don't make the playoffs and we play a great Dodger team or whatnot.

Morton got hurt in his start in the WS, so not sure that technically hurt us against the Braves.

But if the Braves don't have Morton for the season, they perhaps don't make the wildcard, or at least not the WS. Of course, the Astros could have just lost worse to some other team, so who knows what would have happened. Bobrek rules apply here.

Not sure where Charlie Morton saves the Nats World Series.

Cole, JV twice and Greinke (who arguably pitched the game of his career) were our 4 losses. Charlie would have easily been downgraded to our 4th best starter. Urquidy as we know pitched the game of his career in game 4 of the WS as our 4th starter.

2021, definitely could have used Charlie. Maybe even 2020, I would have to look to see how our starters in those first 3 losses to the Rays. Hitting was ultimately our downfall.

Totally appropriate for the current discussion of ugly children and Charlie Morton.

That’s all false. Morton wanted too pitch near his home in Tampa. TB, Atlanta or he’d retire. no one else besides those two teams were considered.

Not true. Astros weren't really interested and wouldn't give him a 2 year deal. They didn't even give him a QO.

Morton Plans To Continue Playing, Would "Love" To Return To Astros - MLB Trade Rumors

If there was any doubt as to whether Charlie Morton would continue his playing career following comments in which he openly pondered retirement, the right-hander indicated last night that he hopes to return for a 12th big league season at the very least (Twitter link via Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle). “I’d love to keep playing,” Morton said after last night’s game. “I’d love to be an Astro. I’d love to be a part of this again. Ultimately, it’s not really up to me. It’s not solely up to me.”

You're incorrect. People are saying it's a snugly baby.
