Was the only starter that had a positive +/-, the team is simply not competitive without him. Not only is he the best player, he is the most important player for the team to have any semblance of an offense.
The way the ball moved was night and day when he was in vs out. On the positive side, they are starting to use his potential when he is in. Hope this goes on.
He miss two free throws he gets mocked for chockin. Meanwhile golden boy kpj plays 42 mins cant even draw fouls. 2 free throws and he misses 1? Really? Sengun does more than kpj with less shots and mins given efficiently.
They should have offered all of these scrubs up for Donovan once he became available. Completely trash roster compared to real super stars in the league.
Yeah that's the thing people don't get, young players develop under bad PG's and on bad teams all the time. It may slow down the development but at the end of the day the stars are the ones who train harder, study more film and take accountability for their play. 90% of Sengun's development is on him, if his career doesn't go well no one will give a F or remember why it happened, it will all be on him. I think he does or will understand this. In fact I think that's exactly what's going on with his passing. His TO's were too high so instead of making everyone else happy with his passing, he cut down his assists and TO's and started focusing on the bread and butter: being a good defensive C and a reliable scoring option. Sengun probably understands right now his career in his hands. This is the difference between people who make it among the elites and those like some of us who are sitting behind a keyboard. When an opportunity that big is in front of you, then you stop blaming external factors and you just keep injecting your own focus and concentration on what you can control. He can't control the coaching. He can't control the PG. He can't control the refs. He shouldn't be concerned about those things. He can control his efficiency, his own defense and whether or not to foul on the court. He can develop his own 3pt shot regardless of the circumstances. I don't think we have to worry. I think he's a high IQ + competitive kid, he can materially improve his defense and counter offensive weapons in the next 1.5 seasons and that's all he's gotta do. Everything else people whine about is just bad habits they've picked up from being sports fans too long.
I completely agree with you. I don't think playing with a bad pg doesn't hinder anyone's development individually but playing with a bad pg is a major setback for the development of the team as a whole and building an identity.
It's a hinderance, but it is definitely not major. Almost every great team started with a bad coach. Mark Jackson, Isaiah Thomas, David Blatt, Luke Walton, Jason Kidd, and the list goes on forever. It's over 90% of champions started with a monkey as a coach. It's annoying, but it does not change the big picture much. The stars on this team will end up stars regardless of the coaching. They can learn everything they want to extract out of this coaching staff - which includes Lionel Hollins, Batiste, Lucas and Abdelfattah. As far as building an identity, we're very far from that process, can be patient with it. Once you have the core you're sure about and the entire organization wants to win, only then you can discover your identity and build on it. At the bare minimum that won't happen till next season. I think we need to relax and take one step back and have a look at the big picture again. We have an abundance of young talent many of whom are developing either slowly or quickly. Given the unprecedented volume of such players on our roster (7 x 19-22 yr olds), it's going to look extra bad early in the process and it's going to look extra good later in the process. It will create a snowball-like effect for this team's future, I've predicted it on record many times. We just have to watch these kids take some punches. Even enduring a bad coach is extremely valuable learning for these players. Let's keep our hopes up and focus on what these players can actually control.
It's literally a trial by fire for the youngsters. Those who manage to adapt and thrive under an incompetent coach will b stronger for it in the long run. Green, sengun and even garuba has improved dramatically compared to when they first started.
Couldn't agree more. It almost seems like a natural way of weeding out those who make excuses from those who keep working. I remember there were a lot of questions about Jalen when his slump was at his worst last season. Most players were slumping but Jalen was doing lots of work - IIRC with Lucas - off the court. It's a simple solution. Shot not falling? Go work on your shot. Not strong enough? Go lift some weights after the game. This one quality though is huge. Most people will look for externalities to explain their problems, but Jalen blamed himself and worked on himself. That's a great example for Jalen himself and the rest of the youngsters to follow. There's always someone or something you can blame for your problems, even when you're the problem. Just keep getting better and more mentally secure about your game. I really believe in this roster and I'm so certain we're in for a hell of a future. People get really impatient about micro issues on the roster but the future is ultra bright if you ask me. We have many incoming picks and cap space too so there's PLENTY of help coming, we are not going to have to live with mediocre rotation players or lack of depth.
I don’t think Donovan was even in the league when he was the age of half of our youngsters. Also, sacrificing the future for one Spida and locking ourselves into the 5th seed isn’t worth it, to me. The Cavs had the infrastructure to help him succeed. We most certainly don’t
