What does them coming out this year have to do with being unknown? Both Burton and Brooks have anywhere from 1st-3rd rd grades on them. Latu can go anywhere from 3rd to 5th
Gonna be funny as hell to reread these arguments when Lovie takes 2 defensive players in the 1st rd.. Then Nick overpays for Jimmy..
No college is a qb factory so this is a silly thing to put as outlier Even the broadcasters were saying the receiving group wasn’t performing this year. Big names are earned in college and they haven’t earned it. I’d be surprised if either of them declare for the draft this year and if they do they will go in 4th round or later.
My point isn't that Stroud is a definite outlier, but rather you can make anyone be an outlier if you try hard enough. A lies, damn lies, and statistics, if you will.
Regardless if Metchie makes it back or not, if Johnston is there with the Browns pick you pick him. Particularly if you draft Stroud.
Man oh man my nightmare scenario seems to be unfolding before my eyes. We beat the sorrowful colts this weekend and end up at #2, thus paving the way for Nick to draft CJ "Gabbert" at #2!!! (yes that's hyperbole but I see Stroud as middle tier QB even though he absolutely balled out against Georgia!) There are SEVERAL Texans-specific factors to be added to the equation though! 1. Caserio came from NE, where they had their own draft board and didn't worry about other boards too much. 2. Cal's big on faith-based personnel and both Young and Stroud are both gonna get 5 star ratings on the Christian scale! 3. It's been OBVIOUS that factor #2 has driven a lot/most of our decisions the last 2-3 years and I don't see it changing any time soon. 4. Stroud does check the height-weight box that Young doesn't but Young checks the "SEC" box that Nick has used so much recently. 5. Young also checks the "played for Nick Saban" box that will allow Nick to get all the inside info on him due to their past relationship. I hope we lose and get the #1 pick and take Young because if we don't I could really see Nick "settling" for Stroud. I know Cal would sign off on it and it's my biggest fear! Per PFF Stroud has the biggest disparity between QBR rating from a clean pocket and QBR rating under pressure in ALL OF CFB! To me that's a MUCH BIGGER red flag than Young's size! And if CHI gets the #! I GUARANTEE you they will trade down with someone, either us or someone willing to pay a king's ransom for a QB. With us I bet they get at least our CLE pick this year or maybe our 2nd rd. this year and a 2 or 3 next year. Then they STILL get Carter or Anderson at #2! I just "see that train a-comin'" unfortunately!
Dude, Levis checks all those boxes as well, and number 2, with a tattoo, to boot! And he's from Connecticut. All three guys we'll be high on. I think Stroud will be third on the list. Which means we won't take him.
Never heard anything on Levis in that regard but I haven't delved into his personal bio either. I'll just say that there's different levels of box no.2, Dwight Howard (or even DW4) being a good example of. At any rate no one can say for sure who we'll be high on because like I stated earlier, Caserio comes from a culture that has their own ranking system and drafts to the beat of their own drummer. What Nick HAS shown me however is that he will acquiesce to a strong personality or to his superiors. I'm convinced Lovie got "his way" on several picks minimum this last draft and it's also obvious that Nick has hired the last 2 head coaches because they fit Cal's "preferred pattern". But if Lovie is fired this offseason Nick won't have that constraint, although if we were to get someone like Sean Payton I think it would be with him choosing his own hand-picked QB. Listen I hope you're right about Stroud being a distant 3rd in our rankings but I'll believe it when I see it (hear from an insider)! It's the old Oiler/Texans fan in me hoping for the best but fearing (even expecting) the worst. Seen this movie waaay too many times!! We'll see.
Yeah I've been banging this drum all year that Young isnt some unfortunate guy with no talent to throw to. Some guys are just not in tune with recruiting cycles and want to promote Young as some savant who made everything happen on his own. He had a great run game and several top 5 national WR recruits. I will defer some in that these young guys were not as refined as some other WRs who have come out of the program, but as you could see in the bowl game they have studs in that room. I wont be surprised one bit to see the ALA WR crop be one of the best in the nation next year. The ALA OL did leave something to be desired compared to the typical high profile players they have there though I will say that.
You’re right that Alabama has great receiver talent. The problem is that Bill O Brien is the OC and just like he didn’t like to play rookies while he was with the Texans, he doesn’t trust true freshmen. The best receivers at Alabama now are true freshmen and they didn’t get any real playing time until the Sugar Bowl. Cmoak can keep posting about Burton and Brooks as if they are great receivers, but they won’t be taken until 4th round or lower. Burton also was a transfer from Georgia where he didn’t do much, and Young’s shoulder injury probably didn’t give them as much time to get in sync throughout the season.
They will not go in the first 3 rounds of this draft. Yes, I will bet on that. Nick Saban advises his players to come back to school if they won’t be picked early so it’s a good chance they don’t even declare this year.
I can't predict how they will do next year to either improve their draft stock or not. The fact is, if they thought they would go in the top 3 rounds this year, they would declare. I'm not saying they aren't talented. I'm saying they have not maximized their physical talent through their play as of yet. Jameson Williams transferred from Ohio State because he wasn't getting playing time and stepped in and made the most of his opportunities at Alabama. Burton hasn't come close to that this year, but he is a great athlete so if he works on route running and consistency over the offseason, he could be a 1st or 2nd round receiver, but as he is currently, he's not.
I am resigned to the fact that I think Young will be the pick. I hope I am wrong, and I probably am, but I just think that Young is the guy that is good enough to make the Texans division winners but not good enough to really threaten the best teams come playoff time. I guess it will be nice getting those Ws against the t***, Jags and Colts.
