If so, what gear are you using? I have an old '73 Marshall that is 'the sound' but it's unusable unless I want the cops turned on me. It's soooo loud and I rarely get to dust it off. So I've jumped into amp modeling and have a Fractal Ax8, which is awesome!

I’ve been playing air guitar for over 40 years. Nobody has ever called the cops on me....though I’m certain my wife has strongly considered it.

I've been asked to turn it down by a nice constable. To be fair, it was after 9pm.

American strat with fat 50s into a Marshall DSL 40, used to have a deluxe reverb regret returning it.

also have a PRS SE semi hollow and roadworn Telecaster that all sound great.

for pedals a little bit of delay with the wampler tape echo and overdrive with the soul food. Actually prefer the Dirty channel of the Marshall Over any pedals. If you want to use your Marshall just buy an attenuator so you can turn it up

You should look into the amp I'm picking up for Christmas; Boss Katana Mark II. You can vary the wattage down to 0.5 so you can still get the sounds you want at low volume. It's solid state, but apparently solid state amps (particularly this one) are outstanding now -- additionally the built in effects are supposed to be top tier.

As for now, I generally play through my PC and during the evening I play with my headphones on. No complaints from the neighbors.

I've also got a DSL 40. I'll probably hang on to it and sell the '73. I've also got a THD hotplate that used to knock down the volume on the '73. I can also re-amp using the Hotplate. But I'm getting cranked tube amp tones from the Fractal unit. I can tweak and tweak and it just sounds better and better.

I did a mod to the DSL 40, where you replace the resistor (C19 mod). It totally made the dirty channel smooth and the amp works great going from green to red channel. I used a tube screamer with my '73 but don't need it with the DSL. It's a great, versatile amp. I also, replaced the speaker with a Creamback.

The katana is a fantastic amp. It’s also dirt cheap. Modeling has come a long long way. Not that it really matters but it sounds identical at any volume level so I don’t really understand the different power modes it offers. I guess just more control of the volume level. That aside, for about $250 you can play anything you want and be happy with the sound. Certainly in your house.

Yamaha also makes a nice amp with their THR line.

The Katanas are supposed to be great amps to use with amp modelers. I hear lots of good things about them.

    Anyone familiar with PRS guitars??

I'm about to pull the trigger on a Silver Sky SE. Seen a lot of comparisons with the strat in terms of playability/range of tones and cost and I'm of the mind that PRS SK SE comes out of factory better than the Mexican Fender Strats. ONE thing that's really holding me back are the awful color choices. So much meh.

Anyone actually have experience with PRS guitars though?

I play a not-that-old PRS CE 24 that has the locking tuners and tremolo. It's my primary guitar. I also have a Fender Strat (1 hum/2 single coils) but my wrist hurts playing it around the first fret after a bit of playing. I haven't played it in a while as the PRS (with the two humbuckers) is my primary guitar for a bit now. Aside from some tuning issues (the locking tuners don't seem to hold it in tune that great...especially the G string), I love the comfortability of the neck playing-wise and the improvement in my sound/tone compared to my previous electric (Jackson Dinky XL) was night and day. I do find myself having to re-tune some (especially...the G string) after I play a song but, occassionally, it holds its tune (especially if I lay off the whammy bar). I actually need to get my PRS checked out and fixed for tuning if possible. I love the PRS guitar, though. So comfortable to play for me personally. I just like the PRS neck. I love the fire red burst finish, too. The Fender neck isn't as comfortable to me. For amp, I use a Fender G-DEC currently albeit I have a GK 250 ML that is louder and better but the G-DEC has built-in effects whereas the GK amp has only chorus/reverb built in along with clean/dirty channels. I paid around $1100 for my PRS on eBay.

Thanks! Interesting that you complain about the tuning issues. That was one thing that was making me lean more towards the PRS, according to reviews/comps.

My (cheap) strat got stolen 3 years ago and I've been playing (cheap) tele since. I can't tell you how many times I've been in local Austin guitar shops with the explicit goal of purchasing something that day, only to become indecisive and insecure (afraid to play in front of folks). I have a Marshall DSL 40C amp. I sometimes use a BOSS ME-80 digital effects pedal board or a soul food electro harmonix.

I probably need a new nut or something. I tried using pencil lead (I use stuff called Tune-It) and all that in the nut and the bridge area. Can't say it fixed anything. I suppose it could be something with the G tuner itself. That's why I want to get it looked at. I can't say this applies to PRS in general as far as tuning issues. Generally speaking, my PRS goes out of tune if I use the whammy bar (maybe not if I go easy). I know there are probably adjustments (may even include new tuner(s)) that can be made to mitigate some of the tuning issues. I'll just say a double locking tremolo is, in my opinion, better...as your locking from nut to bridge eliminating the tuners as the source of slippage. This guitar is from early 2000s as well so I don't know what's changed in newer guitars as far as locking tuners go.

It's always nice to end a song out of tune anyway. Here you are thinking you "nailed it" and went out of tune somewhere. Wonderful!

my main set-up is an american strat with fat 50's and a '72 deluxe reverb. i used to have an early 70's bassman but i wanted to downsize for gigs so i sold it. i listen to recordings with that amp and it makes me very very sad. im more than happy with the DR and dont miss lugging around that bassman head and 2x12 cab, but that was the best sounding amp i ever had.

ive also got a 70's electra hollowbody jazz guitar that i inherited from my grandpa. this thing plays and sounds super smooth. like driving a cadillac!
not mine, but this is what it looks like...

most of my pedals are boss. the same orange distortion has been on my pedalboard for 30 years and the rv-3 for almost as long...

I was huge into playing and waxed/waned over the years as I got busy. Back into it again daily. I’ll tell you something that clicked for me. Started off with “the guitar makes all the difference”! Then as the years went on came to realize when you plug into an amp get most of your tone from there. Messed around with a humbuckijg guitars for years and stayed away from strats because they’re hard to play and don’t hide mistakes, really makes you focus on clean playing and playing on clean channels as the guitar fights you.

i got a lot better but hit a wall, as notes would fret out in my MIM and probably need a setup too. Was in the market for an amp and ended up picking up a custom shop 57 that caught my eye. I sat there and noodled for 15 minutes until the store employee asked if I wanted to actually plug it in. The sustain and playability were out of this world. I fought myself for a while, 5K on a guitar..no way.

ended up making an impulse decision and pulled the trigger. I sacrificed on the amp and still playing on a shitty orange crush (sold my DSL 40 when I moved a year ago). I got past the wall I had stayed in for half a decade. Not because the guitar is some mythical axe…but because of the playability. That’s what I realized I invested in. 90% of guitars will fall in the same range of good tone, go for the one you can play without plugging in, that’s what’s worth the investment .

with respect to prs I like their S2 lineup, best bang for the buck but the SEs are good too. Don’t compromise is my suggestion. My SE semi hollow was fantadtic years ago but I can’t stand it or the glossy neck anymore. The silver sky I’ve tried and really dislike the super thicc neck
