Absolutely is. Is it a job for you to call your plumber or something? You aren't the ones doing the repairs.

That's a career that requires skill or something?

There is no value provided to society with landlords.

no, owning property isn't a skill or talent.

There is a reason why real estate is the go to nepotism career.

Owning property isn't a career. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans who own homes that don't rent out their property that won't consider their ownership of a home as a career.

I mean there is the entire rich dumb high school classmate to real estate investor pipeline that exists that's notoriously famous. We all know those people.

I would think a credit report would tell you all you need to know. Combine that with a do you have a job that pays what you can afford to pay for this place.

Now one thing it wouldn't tell you is if the person was a convicted pedophile. I wouldn't rent to a pedophile. Sorry not sorry.

I suppose you think the builder built the house for free ..... or that the material supplier gave the builder the materials for nothing.

I suppose you believe that potential tenant had the funds to buy the land and build the structure .... or that upkeep is performed by the tooth fairy.

It almost sounds like you don't think we should have to pay for land at all, we should just have range wars & kill each other to decide who owns what?? ....

Your position is preposterous and based upon protecting people who have done harm to society - That's why we send them to prison .... absurd , all because of some silly notion of nepotism.

Few are born with a silver spoon in their mouths, most of us work a lifetime to build what we have ....

The vast majority of homeowners in America were raised in household that owned property. And given that property values have inflated absurdly since the 50s, the vast majority of current homeowners in America had some form of assistance in having been raised in a household that had invested in property allowing for things like large down payments etc.

Property values inflate at a pace greater than inflation by just sitting there. You can make money in real estate if you simply owned a piece of property since the 50s and let it just sit with some casual basic maintenance so the property doesn't become decrepit.

There are a lot of hard working Americans who have a career and bought a house and are now homeowners.

But most Americans who own multiple properties that allow for rental income benefited from being born into at least upper middle class wealth.

When you are talking about a $275k or more investment (the average home price in Houston), wouldn't you like to know more about the potential tenant than a credit report?

You single out chomo's but thieves, killers and rapeo's are fine .... ???

But since housing is a basic requirement for survival, maybe we shouldn't allow people to make investments based on owning property and renting it out for a basic survival need with inelastic demand.

If you are actually ingenious, capable, competent and a hard worker as you say, you can find another means to make money right?

It shouldn't be a problem for the skilled and talented landlords to find something else to make a living off of.

You might want to take a class on real estate because you are really clueless and making a lot of assumptions based upon a slanted perception.

Ya I should. They have like 2 week seminars to become a real estate agent right? They got some online quiz I can take to get my license?

So there are no landlords anymore, now what? Does government own all the apartment buildings? Office space? Can people rent out their space as an Air BNB or is that off limits? What about hotels? What a crazy take, that nobody should be allowed to own property other than their own home. When you move and can't sell the property right away, are you allowed to rent it? Or does it just escheat automatically?

As for the criminal background thing, I don't like the idea that murderers and rapists can move into apartments with small children or other vulnerable individuals. You're making future victims less safe. And if the landlord is unable to perform the background check, then he or she is totally off the hook in terms of liability to the renter if something bad happens as a result.

    [Utopia know won't happen]

Yes rent should be a non capitalist endeavor. Individuals who work hard enough to ammas credit and down payment can own a single family home.

Like I said, you don't have a clue what you are talking about ....

By the way, "Violent" Felons (rape, murder, assault) cannot get a license to be a plumber or electrician in Texas.

No felon can get a real estate or insurance license & we also don't employ them in banks or as police, fire or security.

Notice this thread is about California and the wokesters start complaining about Texas

I doubt any of these woke people have been to Oakland
    Or
    Texas

Not sure I understand your utopia. I'm not sure you do, either, or you might have answered any of the specific questions I asked. I think it's just easier to fling out invectives like "landlords are bad" without thinking through the alternatives.
