I look at it as he is slotted to replace what Houston got from Siri last season: All 584 of Gurriel's 2022 plate appearances go to Abreu Aledmys' 327 pa will go to Hensley (~270) and Dubon (~57) Mancini's 186 go to Brantley Siri's 147 go to Meyers Vazquez (108) and Castro (88) go to Lee Goodrum's 45 (and Taylor Jones' 1 pa) would go to Dubon Verlander's 175 2022 innings go to McCullers (~110) and Brown (~65) Odorizzi's 60 go to Brown Will SMith's 22 (and Pedro Baez's 2.1) go to Taylor/Mushinski
I think the Astros aren't done. They wanted a bonified CF and they still don't have one. With McCormick being a 4th OFer and insurance on Brantley. At this point I believe Meyers and Maton are trade bait and we could get a CF like Reynolds or Mullins that would be the icing on the cake. A Small trade for Alek Thomas to play CF and learn on the fly would be great aswell. Y. Diaz off the bench and Lee as a back up I would be fine with. Roger's would be a solid add not to mention we still have Martinez ready to play
Astros' current projected fWAR positional rankings: C: 29 1B: 15 2B: 1 SS: 24 3B: 3 RF: 3 CF: 23 LF: 1 DH: 3 SP: 12 RP: 11 I think they have SS and RP underrated, and there is probably more upside than downside in the SP and CF rankings. The rest looks about right.
A couple of you guys are wanting Rogers. I'm just looking at the ERA and WAR and it doesn't look good. Even Chafin's ERA is better and you said he'll probably be cheaper. Can you or anyone explain why Rogers is wanted? Looks like he was good in 2018 and 2019 and decent in 2021. Just think the Astros coaches can fix him? Rogers was used more in high leverage situations vs Chafin?
Justin Turner to the Red Sox. Red Sox and Dodgers pretty much swapped players with JD Martinez going to LA.
They are both FB/SL lefties. Rogers has the better FB, Chafin has the better slider. They're both good at getting whiffs. Rogers allowed worse contact result but got more k's and less walks. Chafin has a better chase rate. Rogers has more experience in high leverage. I could be wrong but Rogers seems like a better candidate to be improved/fixed by Houston.
Urquidy and Meyers for Jansen looks like a pretty good match to me, especially if Houston feels like they could still be in the running for Conforto.
At this point I think McCormick is the insurance policy on Brantley. I believe they are working a trade for a CFer. Roger's in relief would be awesome aswell. I kinda think we should look at Gary Sanchez?
I can’t imagine him taking it, but it’s basically a steal if he’s all the way back or an albatross if he’s not. I think taking a chance on Brantley this far out from knowing if he will be healthy again is by far a bigger risk than anything discussed all off-season, but my risk refers to, you know, fielding the best possible tam we can in 2023 and 2024 before Bregman and Altuve are up.
