If he was so healthy in August, why did no one sign him? Also, Betran was a 100-130 OPS+ guy when the Astros signed him. And that was without coming off a year+ injury. By "1/2 a dozen", you mean 20 ABs and starting 5 games? He also had 450+ ABs during the regular season. What happened to "nobody had an OPS+ worse than like 97 or 101 or something like that"?
Has anybody legit verified that there was an actual offer? Or was that just Boras doing what he normally does? Of course Boras will tout how healthy he is. The Astros will do their own medicals and make an offer as to what they feel he can actually accomplish… on their terms.
Surprised people aren’t clamoring for them to be more “active” and “DO SOMETHING!”, when their GM insinuated that they’d be possible bigger players in FA, and they haven’t been (because they actually do have pieces in place that are far more affordable).
Isn’t the logic the other way around usually? Conforto wants a 1 year make good deal so he can get a long term contract next off-season but the Astros would want a slightly longer deal to make it worth it for them.
I liked the 2 year deal with a team option and buyout for the second year posted by someone earlier. The team should have the option on a prove it deal for a player coming off an injury. Maybe modify it to 4-$80, but with a team buyout of the remaining Contract in year 2 for $5M. It's a little higher AAV, but if he IS healthy, we have a replacement for Tucker in 2023.
I think it's more that the Astros put in an offer, but they are sticking hard to a number and that number isn't the best offer.
I think Boras/players want more guaranteed security in case there’s an adjustment period as he’s re-acclimating back to MLB pitching. Probably trying to push for an option year that is easily guaranteed based on certain easy to obtain benchmarks (games played, AB’s). If there wasn’t unknowns, the Astros would probably consider 2 years.
Let's just give him 10 years $300 mil and we got our guy Could you imagine, Correa, Springer, Cole, JV and all of the current Astros would be scratching their heads
Which would be part of my pitch to him. Come sign with the Astros for one year, win a World Series and earn a massive payday next off-season. But he's a Boras guy, he'll 100% only be concerned with the most guaranteed money right now.
Yup basically if he does well, opts out and goes after a bigger contract. If he sucks(or gets hurt), opts in and Houston is forced to pay him after a poor season.
This. Conforto wants a 1 year deal with a player option for a second as his agent suspects his salary will be depressed due to injury. Assuming depressed salary, Conforto wants a 1-year deal if can't get a 1 year with a PO for a 2nd to allow him to bet that he can get a better AAV next offseason. Conforto is likely okay with a 2 year deal as long as he gets paid well (i.e. a lot more per year than his agent and he expects will be offered.)
I’ve never said we should spend money for the hell of it. I’ve said we should spend money reasonably to improve the team. Would I offer him 4/80 or something like that right now? Yes, yes I would. just give him his damn player option. This isn’t a career ending injury at his age. It’s not like he’s going to say- oh- I’ve got an extra year at 17M to fall back on- I’m good. He wants to kill it because there is a ton of money on the line for him.
