hmm . . . Black children represented almost half of all gun deaths and two-thirds of gun homicides involving youths last year, despite making up about only 15 percent of children in America. This disparity of death has grown significantly worse in recent years. Black children are now nearly six times as likely as white children to be killed with a gun.
It's a well known fact that women and children are more at risk of getting shot or killed when there is a gun in the home.
https://www.taxpolicycenter.org/fiscal-fact/median-value-wealth-race-ff03112019 Agree. It's an issue. Let's follow MLK's advice that racial justice isn't complete until there is a radical redistribution of wealth.
On initial plots: seriously great news on vehicle-related child deaths. On guns: we obviously need some good boys and girls with a gun to counter-balance the bad hombrecitos.
this is kind of a weird comment. The article and the graph shown above indicate that the vast bulk of the increase in child deaths due to firearms is occurring among mostly black youth, and these are youth-on-youth crimes. why spin this into a "good boys and girls" with a gun distraction? I think there's a real problem there
related: Two Teenage Boys Fatally Shot in Atlanta, Police Say The Atlanta Police Department said that two boys, 14 and 16, were fatally shot on Saturday after a social media dispute escalated to gunfire. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/17/us/shooting-atlanta-apartment-complex.html excerpt: Two teenage boys were fatally shot in Atlanta on Saturday after a social media dispute escalated into a shootout, leaving at least three other young people injured, the authorities said. Officers responded to a report that multiple people had been shot at an apartment complex around 14 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta at about 5:09 p.m., where they found the two 14- and 16-year-old boys dead, according to the Atlanta Police Department. An 11-year-old boy, a 15-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy had also been shot and were transported to local hospitals, the authorities said. “It appears several victims were taken to the hospital by private vehicle, prior to police arriving on scene,” the police said in a statement, adding that they were continuing to gather information regarding the total number of victims. In a news conference on Saturday evening, Charles Hampton Jr., the deputy chief of the Atlanta Police Department, said that “there was some type of dispute on social media that escalated to gunfire.” He said that one group of teenagers had gone to the apartment with guns, and that another group had fired their weapons. “Both parties had weapons,” Deputy Chief Hampton said, adding that the dispute had begun inside the apartment before moving outside, and that “multiple people were shooting.” He said that homicide detectives were conducting interviews, and that the investigation was ongoing. not sure how joking about "good boys with guns" addresses this seeming disregard for human life among young people
Paywall, so adding one more graph. Suicide is also a major component of gun deaths (overall, #1 or #2 cause of gun death for the past years).
Well since no one else is going to say it, I will…. It’s disgusting. It’s is horrendous that the top killer of children in the USA is firearms and yet we still sell firearms at high numbers. The fact that so many Americans defend it is every bit as gross. I have owned quite a few guns in the past, but I am ashamed of my country deciding that the right to own guns is more important than the safety of children is something I expect in a country that isn’t a democracy… but not the USA.
Who are "all others"? Mainly Asians, I guess, including Indians/Pakistanis? I never even know what to put into these forms when I am asked lol.
It's wild that the it starts to spike up that right after the time the Supreme Court first created the personal right to bear arms in D.C. v Heller and Obama era gun paranoia and sales went nuts.
what I like to do is see everythang an stuff, but we could be lookin at men dass lookin at women dass lookin at social media
It is absolutely disgusting. We spend way too much time defending the right to own a gun and never talking about the ease of acquiring a gun or ownership responsibility. Nobody is having a serious conversation about children having a right to purchase or posses a weapon but yet it's a massive problem that is rarely discussed. Completely two different conversations.
They can’t have too many ethnicities or mix races in the graph cause that would be too many lines and cause the graph to be hard to read plus the people who makes these graphs get their own line @Os Trigonum
Can we have a geo location map too ? I bet lots of kids get shot in Oakland California per capita than Katy Texas
Sure, anyone is, but most domestic violence attacks in homes are against women. She's more at risk of being shot with a gun in the home. The kids usually get hold of an unlocked gun and shoot themselves or their sibling by accident, or use it to commit suicide.
Being out of the US one of the biggest criticisms I've heard from people in NZ, Australia and other places is about the amount of guns in the US. I've heard directly from some Kiwis who said they don't want to visit the US because they fear they might be get shot. In the two weeks I was in NZ there actually was a shooting. Someone fired a gun out of a car in Wellington, no one was killed but it made national news that Wellington LEO were given temporary permission to carry firearms to apprehend the suspect. Last week in Queensland Australia two LEO were ambushed by a shooter with a lot of illegally obtained firearms. Australia is now debating a national gun registry.
In the US, there are only White, Black, Hispanic (white), Hispanic (non-white), and then others (native, Asian - like they are all the same, and Hawaiian & pacific islander). Asian are those from FarEast/SE Asia and Indian subcontinent areas (Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Malaysia, Korea, and so on ...)
