Hate to be the bearer of bad Knicks news, but any trade involving Gordon will most likely also involve Fournier coming back (a. for salary matching, and b. because the Knicks want to ditch his deal) The Knicks do have those 3 trash protected picks, and might be willing to throw one of them in. I'd be interested in the Washington or Detroit pick (neither will transfer in 2023 short of a miracle) - their value marginally increases going forward. We've had both picks before (I think we traded them for Sengun?) We take on Fournier, get one of the DET or WASH protected 1st round picks and Reddish in exchange for Gordon I could think of worse deals. Reddish we get a free swing at, and can facilitate a S&T for him in the summer if required (or maybe he finds redemption here?)
Yes, but I think Barrett is already an established player, not a "prospect" anymore. (Interestingly, he's 22, same age as our KPJ who is still viewed as learning the trade.) If we got him, he would be expected to be a core starter of the future. If we trade both Gordon and Martin, then I am fine with Eason and Tate coming off the bench. But if we keep Martin, it will be too crowded.
Taking on an extra year of Fournier isn’t such a bad deal, it’s not like we are going all out to compete next season. Gordon + Tate for Fournier + Reddish + FRP pick swap (bucks pick for better of Knicks/Mavs)
I'm not sure if we even need to include Tate to make it work? He has value in his own right, if wanting to move him, we could give him extra time before the deadline
We will not be taking on Fournier's contract. That has been a sticking point for Stone all along. He isn't taking back a contract longer than this season. If he were willing to do that, Gordon would have been gone long ago.
That was to make the salaries work to take a flyer on Reddish. Gordon for Fournier + pick swaps (rockets worst for Knicks best). We would move from near 30th to somewhere 14-20ish.
Based on what? Just haven’t heard that from Stone, but haven’t been paying particularly close. We aren’t going to be able to use all of our cap space and we shouldn’t just sign players.
Compared to when? It has certainly changed over the years.... but I'm not aware of a change since July 1 2017. Perhaps I don't understand the rules, which part of the salary matching rules would prevent the Rockets and Knicks executing a trade of Gordon for Fournier/ Reddish?
I just see that Fournier + Reddish’s salary exceeds Gordon’s by several million. So I’m not really sure if the misunderstanding is on my end.
In all fairness, I think the misunderstanding is on your end. I am no expert on the CBA, but I think I have this scenario down! Here is a reasonably simple explanation (of this particular scenario) from https://www.spotrac.com/spots/nba-trade-rules-to-know-as-trade-season-opens-1700/ TRADING AS A NON-TAXPAYER A non-taxpayer has bands for how much salary they can return in a trade. If a non-taxpayer sends out $1 to $6.5 million in a trade, they can bring back 175% of the outgoing salary plus $100,000. If a non-taxpayer sends out between greater than $6.5 million in a trade and $19.6 million, they can bring back the outgoing salary plus $5 million. If a non-taxpayer sends out greater than $19.6 million in a trade, they can bring back 125% of the outgoing salary plus $100,000. This is done to bring some balance to what non-taxpayers can do in trade as opposed to taxpayers. Important Note: The calculation as to whether a team is a taxpayer or non-taxpayer is always done post-trade. That means if a team is going from being under the tax to over the tax, how much money they can return via trade could possibly change. ‐--------- So the scenario I proposed is a match. (All this for a scenario that will most probably never happen!!!) A takeaway might be that it may be worth being sure before calling someone out? There are random trade machines you can plug things into for free which attempt to make calculations based on the current CBA situation. They aren't perfect, but can be helpful
I got an EG idea. Not sure if the Knicks go for it. I'm good with taking an extra year of salary, in this case being Derrick Rose since we really don't need the cap space next year and that big John Wall cap hit clears out. Spoiler: Trade My reasoning, Knicks need a good SF in that starting line up since they are trying to make the playoffs. This also gives them the bird rights to resign Crowder. In addition they get a PG back up that's suppose to be lottery talent. Suns get EG for two players that's are not contributing plus don't have to give up a pick. At worse, they send two 2nd round picks to the Knicks. Rockets can cut Saric and can keep Rose for veteran leadership.
Looking at the current depth of the roster there are only a few positions at lock PG - [EMPTY] / TyTy Washington Jr. SG - Jalen Green / Kevin Porter Jr. SF - Tari Eason / Jae'Sean Tate? PF - Jabari Smith Jr. / Usman Garuba ..C - Alperen Sengun / Bruno Fernando If Rockets keep another draft pick next year the only position that critically needs upgrading is PG. Now, if Webanyama falls in your lap obviously Sengun needs to slide to the 4 and Jabari slides to the 3 but Gordon + Milwaukee's pick might net you a legit starting point guard. When you have guys like Green, Jabari, Alperen and possibly Webanyama who need to be FED the ball, tlyou end the experiment with KPJ and get a pass first point guard to maximize the 4 other guys talents. PG - Draft Trade or FA / TyTy Washington Jr. SG - Jalen Green / Kevin Porter Jr. SF - Jabari Smith Jr. / Tari Eason / Jae'Sean Tate PF - Alperen Sengun / Usman Garuba ..C - Victor Wembanyama / Bruno Fernando Man, how pissed would the rest of the league be if that roster ended up being that stacked??!
Happy to help if I can be helpful! (And I was trying not to sound like a douchebag - apologies if anything came across badly)
