Explain why we should trust Musk's narrative here at face value?

    again, incorrect.

yes, you are free to be an ahole. But it is not free speech. Its being an ahole. The courts have ruled on this over and over again that claiming 'free speech' is not a free for all excuse to do whatever you want.

The entire point here is Musk is claiming to be a free speech absolutist, which he is clearly not. Yes it is his playground and he can make whatever rules he wants, just like previous management. The difference is previous management was not screaming "I am a free speech absolutist"

I basically agree, and when the immediate conservative reaction to this story is "Haha, see libs, now you know how it feels!" -- they are essentially advertising themselves as hypocrites in exchange for having the satisfaction of pointing out the hypocrisy of others.

Basically, when it comes to politics, almost everyone is a hypocrite. Let's just accept that.

In this case were leftists and liberals ever the ones to star complaining about content moderation on privately owned platforms?

They are the only ones with a consistent position here I believe. Anyone criticizing Elon for banning aren't upset really about the banning itself. They are just afraid of the one way street of "free speech" the right has been crying for for a century now and believe it's just nothing more than fascists b****ing about wanting to have a one way street in terms of speech.

Well for starters, he was supposedly super concerned enough for his kid's personal safety to have his driver stop and take a video and ask the world to help identify the guy ... but didn't bother to file a police report.

    https://www.latimes.com/california/...s-stalker-incident-no-police-report-lapd-says

And then used the incident as an excuse to go out and ban a bunch of people he didn't like who had nothing to do with the incident. Sounds super legit.

the difference is that other than the plane guy, nobody has been "banned." Musk has said the suspended accounts will be reactivated in seven days. this is more akin to a Facebook jail timeout than a ban

The left thinks when you put "fascists" in charge that will curtail their free speech. The right felt that with "woke leftists" in charge, their free speech was being curtailed. People on both ends are claiming the other wants a "one way street" when it comes to free speech. Surely, you can see the symmetry, even if you feel more philosophically aligned with one of the sides (as do I).

Except it's not. But in case you don't know how to turn off an ad-blocker for a page,

Elon Musk claims ‘crazy stalker’ followed his son but hasn’t reported it to LAPD, cops say

No. Why would you assume it's some perfect balance. Has there been a history of 100 years of leftists crying wolf about speech and then taking power and making it a one way street? There are very prevalent examples of this happening in nations that went from a republic to a fascist state.

From a historical perspective can you justify "bOtH sIdeS"?

History shows that when it comes to permitted speech the balance favors those in power. Irrespective of their political orientation. And there has been a dramatic power shift on who controls the conversation at Twitter.

It's funny how triggered @Major gets by Elon Musk.

Just because all your predictions were hilariously and embarrassingly wrong (as always) - despite being presented with a false sense of grandeur - doesn't mean that you need to be so bitter towards that man.

Whether it's permanent or 7 days or 1 day or 28 days - all up to the owner of the site. Don't like it, start your own Twitter. Private company.

It would be problematic if the government had colluded with or put pressure on Elon (which is what they are trying to do now) in order to silence certain types of speech. But that's not what happened here.

Well, it did happen - a lot - but that was under previous ownership.

Sweeney was also tweeting the private jet locations of other rich folks (Gates, Bezos, Zuckerberg, and other very rich people in other countries). They are all public info. With few exceptions, there is no privacy to flight.

There is a huge difference between posting publicly available information on aircraft location in the AIR vs posting the real time location of a person in the GROUND (which can only be done through physically following them - aka stalking).

None of the journalists that got suspended posted real time flight information about Musk's private jet. They were posting about Musk banning Sweeney's account and about free speech.
