That's ridiculous that you deemed Bregman a huge question mark coming into this past season. The injury wasn't chronic for Christ's sake.
If he is the pick, any idea whether Stearns (having come from the Luhnow tree) would be inclined to try to replace the brain-power in the org?
He also draws an obscene amount of walks. If he could get up to 250 while maintaining the walk rate he’d be really good. his career OPS+ is 103 meaning 3% better than league average. Even hitting 202 he had 0.9 WAR in 253 AB’s. That profiles out to 2 or 2.5 WAR over a full season, which cut line is basically average starting regular. No idea if there’s another gear there or if he could keep it up over 550 AB’s.
Imagine if the Mets and the Dodgers gets into a bidding war. I'm sure other teams will be after him as well. Ohtani might care more about winning than money. Astros needs to win back to back WS and swoop in lol
It's not farfetched. Bregman was very mediocre last season and especially in the playoffs. I didn't with them but their were fans screaming to drop him to 7th in the lineup.
I want him to be an Astro, but by my own admission, largely because he's Craig Biggio's son. His name pops up a lot on fantasy trade discussions here. If his name was Cavan Smith, nobody on this forum would care about him (unless he was Dave Smith's grandson, which would then further prove my point).
Oh I agree completely. I don’t follow any other teams utility IF with 200-300 AB’s over the course of a year. It’s 100% his lineage and I’d love to see him as an Astro.
Here is a thought: look at the stats. It might also help answer what you are missing to read Kevin Goldstein's chats during his short time employed by Fangraphs. You will find them very enlightening on the subject of Bregman as a shortstop.
Where are you getting that he is a plus plus defender at 3B? Certainly not any statistical metrics. They say he is okay, not really good, not really bad. What makes him a great 3B is his bat to ball skills. They are elite, elite, elite
Yordan is your starting LF and Brantley isn’t likely to be ready for the start of the season. If they sign him, given his age and history, I’d imagine the Astros will be cautious with his workload this season.
Yordan will get at least 35% of the starts at DH. If Brantley is here, even by June, he probably gets 30-40% of the starts at DH. That doesnt leave much room for Yainer to be the everyday DH. A part-time DH, sure.
This proves you know nothing about baseball and probably don’t even watch the Astros rabble rabble rabble. Or, it could prove you understand stats and have common sense.
If he’s a regular to start the season and he hits anywhere close to what he did at AAA last season, he’s going to find consistent ABs. Wouldn’t it be nice if the Astros problem next year is finding ABs for a .920 OPS bat?
If the Astros have a .840 to .860 hitter at DH next season, they have a heck of a chance to repeat. That’s an amazing lineup 8 deep to go with the best pitching staff in the AL.
