Happy for CC. Also happy he went to the NL on a team I don’t hate.

they'll be much better than what they were last year at the bottom in defense

Good for Carlos. After last offseason, I really thought he was making a mistake waiting a year to test free agency again. But he and his agent clearly made the right move. This offseason and the crazy spending was not something I had anticipated. Still, despite the long contract, I agree that this really isn't that bad for the Giants. If Carlos gives them top 5 MVP level performance for 4-5 years, then he will be overplaying this contract. On the last 4-5 years I'm sure he will not be, but by then payrolls will likely have increased to the point that paying a guy $27MM to not get much production is probably not gonna hamstring you. It's not something I would want the Astros to do, but I think it will end up being a better deal for the Giants than the Judge deal is for the Yankees, for example.

Aren't deals only bad if they hamstrung you into being unable to improve the team further?

The Yankees and Giants (and Mets, Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, Phillies) have proven that they will never be in that position with these sorts of deals.

On another board I argued for giving Correa a lifetime contract of something like 15/300M 4 years ago, before his first arbitration year. I was told I was the dumbest MF on the planet by most. I said why not, that’s a value, dudes going to make 400M in his career and 20M a year will be regarded as nothing.
Well, Bellinger just got 17M after being non tendered for sucking and Correa just signed a deal to take his career earnings to something like 412M.
Reading all the people here mocking CC and saying he wouldn’t get paid is hysterical. He could have been paid last year by Detroit (275M) but he rightly determined that wasn’t enough if he was healthy and proved it right with the 3rd biggest (I think) deal of all time behind Trout and Judge? Good for him. obviousky the deal will suck when he’s 38 years old but that’s just the cost of business. Correas target to make the deal worthwhile is in all likelihood 35 War. If he’s a HOF gamut he gets there if he’s not then he doesn’t.
I’m rooting for him every game that’s not against the Astros interests.

Well for Carlos, he needed to bet on himself for one year to clear doubts. I am glad he did, because you can’t help but root for his bubbly personality. Last offseason, it’s somewhat apparent that teams needed to see him be healthy for more than one season. And he chugged along another seemingly healthy season with the twins.

I’m very surprised how creative they got with the contact. So for the next 5 years when he is expected to be his most productive, he’s a 35-40 million dollar a year player. The following 5 years he’d be a 20-25 million dollar player. And for the last 3 years he’d be a 10-15 million dollar player. I see this as three contracts in one.

but as someone mentioned it, his agent got him 385 million in 14 seasons. Which is awesome for Correa.

It's one of the less ridiculous contracts given out this offseason given how long they spread it out and how many prime years they should get.

Pena very obviously had a terrific postseason. He also posted a .289 OB% last year. Hopefully, he'll be able to build on it - but Astros fans need to prepare themselves for the extremely likely possibility that 2023 Pena is not gong to look anything like the 2022 Postseason Pena.

Trea Turner and Bogarts already have the edge on that… but again, these contracts are only “bad” if it prevents these teams from competing or making other moves down the road.

There is zero chance that these deals will prohibit other moves given these teams’ resources.

He is a big unknown offensively but down the stretch he really cranked in on his power numbers and it carried over into the postseason. Don't get me wrong I know this is all a small sample size that's exactly why I said it'll be interesting to look in 3 years. But it sure does seem like a lot of people miss that I said that part.

Carlos himself really steadied his game after a slow start and an injury in the wrist so it's possible he may win a MVP if he stays healthy. I love both players but for the price no question Pana.

I am very happy for CC, these long-term contracts are not what I would want but hey, get that money while you can.........on the plus side for the team, they did balance it out so your not paying 30 million a year when he is at the tail end of it

Very good way of looking at it. $200M/5yrs for age 28-32; $100M/5yrs for age 33-37; $50M for age 38-40. Seems pretty fair when you look at it that way.

The problem with that thinking is that the CBT is figured on average salary so every year counts the same regardless of how its structured or actually paid to him.

That's seriously going to be a new level of hatred from the dodgers fan base. He might need some security when they visit.
