probably depends on how competitive Giants are at the time. Could be a Pujols situation where he DHs and chases some counting numbers for HOF.

Is there some new rule in baseball that you can release a player under contract?

You can DFA a player at any point… but they will still get paid.

Possibly but not likely. If he is still able to play at 41 I’ll be impressed… don’t forget. … the Angels released Pujols.

The Angels did it with Pujols… and there are others. Most guys that are old just retired when they are DFA. Pujols decided to go back to St. Louis… hell, even Babe Ruth was released.

There is a difference between being released in MLB and the NFL. Being released in MLB means you still get paid the balance of your contract and are also a FA. In the NFL, you stop getting paid.

carlos will live very nicely in the Bay Area, in Houston and wherever else he wants to be. SF/Bay Area is insanely nice with wine country, Marin county, Sausalito close by, and he can afford it all.

What a unique niche that I, frankly, never considered. I doubt (maybe naively) that is actually a verbalized pitch to Latin prospects, but the reality of the situation and the history of our successes is there. Hmm.

Senior moment. I read Giants and immediately thought New York Giants.

We have zero impact players not found by Luhnow. I wouldn’t declare some sort of Crane supremacy just yet.

Only $27M AAV. It's a very Short term gain with long term consequences.

But if you anticipate escalating salaries higher than the base inflation rate, it's not a bad financial move.

I'm way too young but some people still remember the days when they were both the New York Giants.

I don’t know if he’d turn that down. The three years of Arb $$ with that deal might be more than enough too offset him averaging 27.5 mil a season for the last seven years. At some point Crane is gonna pay the right guy and with only 44.5 on the books in 2026, it looking like Tucker and/or Valdez are it. Someone made a good point these long term deals won’t look as bad in 5-10 years as the $$ keeps growing, even if the player flames out.

Tucker or Pena (assuming he keeps up the trajectory) are who I'd want getting the long-term deal. Between Javier and Valdez, easily the former. I have a feeling that pitch to contact grounder isn't going to age as well as swing and miss (and that's without accounting for the shift rules).
You know, it's kind of strange how pitchers are always the ones getting the super high AAV deals. Position players are the ones playing every day.
