You equate Meyers to Urquidy (3 World Series wins) as trade value? Meyers has almost NO value at this point. He's a PTBNL level value.
I'm with you on this, agree on all points. I think we could sign Jansen to an extension. The temptation of becoming a starting catcher finally might get him to sign a fair extension (3 years, 30 million, boy does that sound familiar lol).
The claim was that he was looking for 10-yr, $300MM last offseason. Now he's locked in $385 over 14 years. That means he locked in 4 extra years at $21MM/yr - around age 38-42. Something he would almost certainly not get as a free agent at age 38. Pretty sure he did OK for himself.
This right here is the biggest reason I would’ve brought back JV. The track record of the rest of our rotation - while plenty capable - lacks the sample size to simply pencil in another unbelievable year. Never mind the huge assumption that no one misses significant playing time. Now certainly fatter time could catch up to JV but you would put more money on him replicating or at least getting close to last year over anyone else. Simply put, bringing back JV gave us the highest probability of repeating. Costly? Sure. But most impactful.
Realistically, we have 6 solid starting pitchers and need 4 of them to have good years. We can afford backsliding by 2 and still win the division and make the playoffs. I feel confident that no more than 2 of our 6 will have down years. Their youth helps insulate us somewhat against injury risk.
Probably Tucker. @Nook has said Tucker wants to hit free agency. After seeing these contracts for players ages 28-31 why not hold out.
I think we've seen enough from Framber most certainly and even Javier and we know McCullers is a bulldog and staying healthy is his only question mark. Garcia and Urquidy wasn't special so having repeat seasons of 3.50-4.00 era is not asking for a ton. The biggest question mark by far is Brown (even though if you referenced CF for thoughts on him you would swear he's destined for the Hall of Fame). It's way too small a sample size. We will really know what we have in Brown after 2023.
Crane still holds the balls of the league in his hands. We have a competitive advantage in player development and have a corner on Latin America. We entice guys to play here so they can win and then earn huge deals elsewhere.
