How would charging people with felonies for petty crime solve crime?

Carry out your solution to its logical progressions. Society isn't cruel enough yet to send someone to prison for petty theft for decades. That means that individuals will eventually still get out within a couple of years as it is petty theft. The only difference is now they have a felony on their record which makes them more likely to not be part of the legal side of society.

I know Wegman's, and I believe a couple of other grocery stores, have done away with self-checkout due to theft. The methods of said-theft were widely shared on...prepare to be shocked...social media like tiktok.

Walmart is the largest retailer in the world.

Walmart as a business model has become ungodly wealthy by profiting off taking advantage of tax payers by passing costs off on them.

They have done it by trying to get special tax breaks, by refusing healthcare coverage in the past and actually instructing their under paid employees to file for food stamps and other federal and state aid.

Walmart is a leech on the USA.

Now Walmart is mad that people are stealing in their stores and are blaming the government rather than hiring additional security.

Further, Walmart is acting as if this some new major problem, when in reality it has always existed and is only up 25%.

They are claiming that theft has cost their stores 600 million dollars since 2020..... What Walmart didn't bother tell you is that their gross profit in 2022 was up 23% and their gross profit for the past 12 months was 147 BILLION DOLLARS.

If Walmart is so concerned, THEY can hire more security and do things to limit theft.

The idea that Walmart is going to suddenly start closing a large number of stores is comical as they are in the midst of one of their most prosperous periods in the corporation's history. '

So, this nothing more than the world's largest retailer seeing what else they can get for free from the tax payers.

Walmart is still making record profits, even with increased theft because they are not paying as many employees.

FWIW they DO catch people that fail to pay for things at the self-service checkouts.

What they do is keep notes and video on repeat offenders and once they have enough tape and examples, they arrest and charge you and use the tape at trial. I know that they do that in Illinois for example.

Something else to note: including theft, if the self-checkouts weren't as cost-effective as manned checkouts, they wouldn't have them. It's all numbers.

Which is why, as I mentioned earlier, some stores are getting rid of them.

Self checkouts are awesome. If I had 50 items, I'd still use one if they'd let me.

I don't need anyone to pump my gas for me either.

    Walmart wants to close stores?

Close them. They pay bottom wages and rely on the government for the healthcare of their employees.

What's better is self checkout with a phone app, like Sam's has. I'm always baffled by the lines there. I can understand if you need to buy something big and need a checkout person or need to pay with a check or gift card, but otherwise, scan that **** with your phone and walk out.

The location of the Walmarts are important to whether they close it.

Just like Starbucks , they are closing a bunch in certain cites and states
    While other locations say
The Las Vegas strip has like 2 Starbucks in the same hotel and no homeless people or thugs

    Exactly this.

I bet hiring a few more workers back to actually scan items would shrink their thefts down quite a bit.

They're forcing this on themselves by having 30 aisles open for checkout and only 2 actual cashiers.

I do not steal. Never have . Never would. But it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that those that do have just been handed their loot on a silver platter. Hell, I'd venture to guess that a small portion of these "thefts" are just people innocently missing items in their cart.

If Walmart decides to close a store because of theft, they were going to close the store anyway. They are making massive profits and they have the financial means to hire additional security if they want.

We can have a discussion on how to handle misdemeanors but Walmart is irrelevant.

    good guy with a stanchion

Veteran takes down knife-wielding man in South Carolina Walmart

    https://nypost.com/2023/01/13/veteran-subdues-knife-wielding-man-in-south-carolina-walmart/

    excerpt:

“That’s when my military training kicked in and I casually walked over to the object not only to take him down but also protect myself in case I failed, but with my great military training I was able to neutralize the threat until law enforcement arrived,” Davis told Fox News.

Video shows Davis grabbing a stanchion and whacking the man over the head from behind. The man falls to the ground, dropping the knife and another customer stands over him and quickly scoops it up.

The customers held the knifeman down until deputies arrived.

The sheriff’s office said the man was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Portland will be better off for it.

I cannot express how bad Walmart is in all their business dealings.

For those wondering - the thunderous Walmart exodus from Portland is a total of TWO STORES.

Also, according to Walmart, they are leaving Portand because they did not meet financial expectations...

Whatever you want to say about Walmart, it's a great place for people who don't make a lot of money.

It is great for them when they walk in their and purchase their items.

It isn't a great place for people that live by one, that work in one, that get hurt in one or have business dealings with one.

All true. However, they mostly just have those offenders trespassed from their stores first.
