Not even close on the arbitration years. Typical first year of arbitration would be 3 or 4M for all but superstars (Last year was year 1 of Arb for Framber and he made $3M). Year 2 would be $7-10M and year 3 would be 12-15M for all but the biggest of the big stars. Year 4 gets up over 20M for big stars. Of course, the only people who get to Year 4 or super 2's like Framber. The other guys are not that and will only have 3 Arbitration. So- if you are looking at a deal for Javier it's something like 3M year 1- 7M year 2- 12M year 3- his total arb worth 22-25M. So a 5 year deal where you are buying out FA for 2 years or something like that should be 5/85 on the extension. You discount this with a pitcher that's 3 years away from a pot of gold and the reasonable deal would be something like 5/70M
Would have really wanted him, but man the price would have been insane, especially as a division rival (most likely). Perhaps d'Arnaud (surprisingly cheap contract) can be had as a 1/2 year bridge.
Let's see what the Braves do with their existing catchers. Contreras can DH for them but that hurts his value. They also have Travis D'Árnaud as well.
I gave you a projected roster. If you're valuing Yuli over Seth Martinez then sell me on it.... We have a great pen as is and starters that should keep them from getting overworked.
2nd year in a row that the Braves traded for the best available trade target for the Astros who happened to be an Athletic. Granted, Astros didn't have much to offer either time.
Wonder who Brent Strom wants… Garcia Brown or Urquidi? Or maybe Bryan Abreu. Maybe the man loves him some enoli paredes. I struggle to see a deal with AZ that doesn’t include Garcia or Brown, but maybe AZ takes quantity instead
Cost being too high suggests A's want guys that Astros plan to use in the majors this year and have a decent chunk of value. I don't consider those guys readily available unless other team is being stupid. I like Gilbert, but I don't think he can carry a trade that big, yet.
Varsho fits very well. As I posted before, his defense is elite and better than even Chas and Meyers who are stellar. His arm is just as weak as theirs He hits LF which would balance the lineup. I don't see him worth the price considering Meyers or Chas are just right-handed poor man's copies of him. But we don't know what that price is. If a deal does not include any of the pitchers on the MLB 26 man then it may be ok. Problem is best position player prospects are outfielders and that's what Arizona is trying to thin out. Paredes, Murray, Santos, and Joe Perez for him? May not be enough.
Jim crane has said time again that the most important things are pitching pitching pitching. I have a hard time seeing us dealing Garcia or Brown, but what the hell do I know
