Nah, I think we got it out of the way, plus since I don't think the Astros are in on any quality FA's it doesn't really matter how they spend their money at this point. It certainly seems like the only remaining move they'll make is to bring back Brantley, if that's all they are planning, why not bring back Vazquez too? When I was suggesting not wasting money on that move it was with the idea of using that money to better address the LF/DH hole.

The clubs pursuing Vázquez include the Twins, Padres, Cubs and Astros. Murphy obviously would be a fit for those teams as well. The Rays and Guardians also have shown interest in Murphy, who is under club control for three more seasons. The other catchers available in free agency include: Mike Zunino, who is recovering from thoracic-outlet-syndrome surgery; Jorge Alfaro; Tucker Barnhart; Curt Casali; Austin Hedges; Omar Narváez; Roberto Perez; Kevin Plawecki; and Gary Sánchez. • Yes, the Pirates are willing to entertain moving center fielder Bryan Reynolds, if only because clubs are almost always willing to listen to trade offers. Teams interested in Reynolds, however, say the price tag is similar to what it was in the past — exceedingly high. One rival official, in what surely was an exaggeration, said the Pirates want a “Soto-type package” for Reynolds. Another said Reynolds is “super expensive.” A third described him as “unlikely to move.” • The Diamondbacks, on the other hand, seem likely to trade one of their left-handed hitting center fielders — Daulton Varsho, Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy (as reported earlier, Corbin Carroll, the most highly regarded of their emerging outfielders, is not in play). The Yankees, Rangers, Blue Jays, Rays and Marlins are among the teams chasing young outfielders in trades. So are the Reds, as I explain in the item below. But with the Diamondbacks seeking major-league-ready help, it’s difficult to see how the Reds could entice them.
I wonder when Cohen expands his plan of attack and starts buying top prospects from other teams at above market rates … meaning Mets trade meh player plus a enormous pile of cash for bad player on a bad contract plus good prospect.
I would love to add Duvall. I suppose I’m biased because I want him on the Stros because he’s a fellow type 1 diabetic, but he could be a monster in our park and in our lineup and obviously at a competitive price.
Mad Max can opt out. There is a ton of pressure for the Mets to win it all this upcoming year. Their farm system isn't great which is why Cohen stated he didn't mind spending in order for their organization to rebuild its farm system.
I feel like this is the most likely scenario... Vasquez is signed as starting catcher. Maldy is the backup. Lee is in AAA one more year as everyday catcher. Diaz is AAA everyday DH. They trade some low level prospects for a centerfielder. Brantley is back platooning with McCormick at LF and DH with Yordan rotating. They sign an older starter like Hamels or Cueto as insurance with the right to compete for 5th starter... ez as starting catc. Maldy kup
Lol yes he is if he stays healthy and balls out. JV just inked 86m over 2 years and he’ close to two years older.
If he passes on 43M guaranteed to hope for the same max amount over 2 years, that would be really risky without an extension prior.
Good lord. 90% of Correa’s value is his defense. And you want him on the bench? Not to mention, Peña is not as good as him in the field. I know we love Peña but him starting over correa is ridiculous. We have a few holes, and Correa literally doesn’t fill any of them. plus he wants 10 yrs > 300 mil
I think that answers your question then. If there's no one you want to have signed for the prices they are signing for, I'm not a real GM would have done any better than Crane, right?
What I am aware of and what Crane is aware of are hopefully very different. I cant speak for whatever deals Crane may have thought would happen and didnt. Or perhaps there weren't any more to begin with. Whether a real GM would have done better or worse was meant as a question.
Correa had ONE season over 2 dWAR. Pena already has ONE. Correa would need to play the field, but not at SS. I'd prefer 3B and move Bregman to 2B and Altuve to DH. But that's on paper and reality doesn't always work that way. Correa at 3B takes advantage of his amazing arm and puts him in position to be the outstanding cutoff man he is. Pena loses value at any other position.
