Even the idea of trading Brown is seriously pissing me off. What an absolute disaster that would be. Geezus. I don’t care if I’m overvaluing him. There is no way in hell I’m throwing him away for Sean Murphy, not a chance. I’m not trading brown for players much much better than Murphy. That is absolutely asinine. Of course, if you’re Oakland, you might as well demand it, but if I’m the Astros it’s a complete non starter. Absolutely not. What baseball universe am I living in where a GM would even consider trading his top pitching prospect, a guy that basically won the pitching triple crown in AAA, for a plus catcher with a couple of years of control. Lord.
baseballtradevalues.com Garcia 45.6 Brown 28.3 McCormick 31.3 Those are our 3 trade pieces worth anything. McCormick is the only one i would deal. He has huge value.
I’m imagining a world where the Pirates consider themselves a fringe playoff contender next year. I think he might have value under those circumstances.
They wouldn’t let me trade McCormick for Springer. Said the deal wasn’t fair to Houston and Toronto would have to kick in a bunch of cash. I feel like I’m the real world of Houston called Toronto with that deal Toronto would hang up on them laughing. In other words- I think that site overvalues slightly above average players that are pre-Arb and undervalues all star level dudes on FA contracts.
It devalues contract cost significantly. Springer costs 30M a year. McCormick is pre-arb and costs peanuts. As I said, McCormick has a lot of trade value. In the real world, nobody is trading for a 30M dollar Springer. You can sign a 30M player any offseason.
Brown is definitely a guy you trade if you're getting a Cy Young or MVP candidate back. Other than that, it's not worth risking the pitching depth.
I would not trade Hunter Brown straight up for Sean Brown. I don't understand why you think he is that valuable when teams win all the time with lesser catchers. Can you help me out here?
Murphy for Brown would not be far off (if we added a lot more to the deal). My issue would be losing the SP. High quality SP are very expensive right now. It would cost a fortune to replace Brown in our rotation.
there are similar posts, but i the big delta is we have seen hunter pitch in the bigs (and well) vs forrest
I agree with this, but I look at it in reverse I would need a lot more than Sean Murphy in a trade for Hunter Brown. Is that crazy?
Whatever Brown would be expected to contribute in 2023 could be pretty easily replaced by a 2nd or 3rd tier veteran FA SP like Kluber, which Houston can easily afford. Longer term, you can rely on player development. Again, 3-4 years ago if you'd suggested Houston would get absolutely nothing out of Whitley (or traded him), we all would have wondered how in the hell Houston maintained a competitive rotation. Look how that turned out. Brown is a good prospect. At this point his stock is peaking as a prospect, and he's likely to be ranked in the 30-50 range on prospect lists going into the season. He has a lot of value. And I am not 100% sure that trading him for Murphy would be a good deal for Houston, mostly because of how much faith I have in the Astros pitcher evals and development. But using that same logic, if Houston decides to trade Brown, I will assume its because Houston wisely thought the other side was overvaluing him and/or has high confidence in replacing his innings internally down the road. FWIW, I would absolutely not do Garcia AND Brown for Murphy, which is apparently the asking price. But I would definitely consider a trade with one of those 2 as the headliner.
Wait so a very good catcher is as valuable as a TOR pitcher? Even when they are both club controled for several more years Is that more valuable than a potential TOR pitcher?
And that is 100 sporadic at bats. I’m not sure he ever started 2 in a row (maybe once) and would sit routinely for 3 to 4 games in a row. So yeah, to judge him on that is just silly.
Wait wut? Brown can be replaced by a pitcher like Kluber? Is Brown still considered just a prospect after what he did last year? What am I missing her because this sounds ridiculous.
Its funny how 8 years ago we were wondering if the Astros org would ever produce homegrown pitching talent that were gonna be effective in the mlb and now we have a whole starting rotation of top notch homegrown pitching.
Yes that's crazy. Basic economics 101 A's have a very rare asset in demand It would be surprising if Murphy is not a top 10 catcher in MLB next season and for at least a few more years. He has proven this. Hunter Brown has wonderful potential but it would not be a shock if a dozen or more SP in their 1st or 2nd seasons out performed him much less several dozen established veteran starters. Teams want catching and it's rare. Unproven top SP prospects could potentially be even more valuable but just as easily could become Forrest Whitley and every team has one or two.
