German officials arrested 22 suspected members and three suspected supporters of a far-right terrorist organization across the country on Wednesday on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.

In a statement, the German federal prosecutor’s office said an estimated 50 people were suspected to have been part of the group called Reich Citizens movement, founded no later than November 2021, who were plotting to overthrow the government and replace it with their own order.

I'm pretty sure American fascists draw all their inspiration from a failed Austrian/German painter named Schickelgruber, so everything comes full circle.

It feels like this story is artificially blown up. These people are obviously really crazy weirdos and probably need to be in jail, but I don't see anyone even remotely taking them seriously.

Well, you would know you are the master of artificially blowing stuff up.

You have no self awareness at all.

You are the guy that takes everything serious when it could be considered a bad look for Democrats.

You just artificially blew up the entire Pelosi thing.

    For real dude.

    * 3000 police officers in action
    * One person arrested is (now was) an active judge in Berlin and former member of Bundestag/Parliament (of course for nazi party AfD)
    * There are entanglements to the Bundeswehr/Army and special force KSK

    This is not nothing.

It's not "nothing", but look at these people.

This guy wanted to be emperor of Germany.

    lol

It's not like you had tanks rolling towards the Reichstag. A few weirdos - including a weirdo judge and a weirdo former member of parliament - had some weird fantasies.

We've known for ages that our police and military has strong ties to nazis and fascists. So yeah, of course they'd be delirious to actually believe they could take over the country. Still, these kind of people having access to armory plus their willingness to go deeper and deeper into blind fanatism might lead into dark days sooner or later, so I'm glad the defense mechanisms have worked for now.

It doesn't matter how dumb people look or how incompetent they are at their job.

We have learned that we have to take these threats seriously.

I think to say "our police and military has strong ties to nazis and fascists" is too much of a generalization. A tiny percentage of them do.

When we talk about actual persons, you're right. When we talk about ideology, you're not.

Hitler often cited the American KKK movement as a source of inspiration for his manifesto he wrote in jail Meinkampf.

And important to note that the KKK was inspired by the age old notion of wealthy oligarchs restoring oppressive control of their labor force who were angry about “their slaves” being given some rights and freedoms after their civil war failed and killed hundreds of thousands.

Look at where the world is because of greed being the root cause of all of this evil, hate, and violence. Fascism and White Supremacy is a viscous cycle set in motion because a bunch of rich people got mad that they weren’t making enough money on the backs of slave labor. That is the ultimate dark side of humanity right there.

Germany, America, South Africa, Greece, China… we all likely have the same story to tell in our history at some level of greed leading to hate and violence. No one country is immune but some (Germany and America) are two of the most wealthy in modern human history which is probably a big reason why both countries have been at the forefront of this fight between democracy and fascism/totalitarianism.

I think both countries/societies are less inspiring themselves as much as they are dealing with the repercussions of both being societies with a ton of wealth and privilege that isn’t so easily shared among classes.

    The German “Far Right”
    Dave Schuler December 8, 2022

Normally, I wouldn’t have mentioned the aborted coup attempt in Germany but, since it touches on one of my pet peeves, I thought I’d mention that angle. I sincerely wish that Americans wouldn’t project their own politics and political differences onto the politics of other countries about which they generally know next to nothing. “Right” and “Left” mean different things in different countries and just because you consider yourself left-leaning doesn’t mean that a left-leaning party in another country holds your ideological brethren.

To take the simplest, most proximate example, American conservatives have practically nothing in common with British Tories and only the most extreme American progressives would find their views aligned with those of British Labour. Most similarities are superficial and, I presume to both of their horrors, more Democrats are like Tories than Republicans are.

The coverage of the German coup attempt has been very clear. In much of Europe “extreme right-wing” means royalist and that is what this coup attempt was. Some extremists wanted to install a distant inheritant of the German throne as head of state.

In the United States, although there has been some growth in would-be monarchists over the last dozen years, “extreme right-wing” tends to be radical libertarianism. The only point of contact between the extreme right in Germany and that here is that both tend to be nationalist but it should go without saying that German nationalism and American nationalism are incompatible. We’ve participated in two major wars to oppose German nationalism. Now is no time to think that it’s a good thing.

My recommendation is for American to focus on U. S. politics and avoid meddling in the internal politics of other countries. Leave commenting on the internal politics of other countries to those with more expertise. We barely understand our own society and politics.

I think the extreme right has a self awareness problem where they say they aren't "monarchists" who are "libertarian" but then slip on slide on c*m filled floors on their knees for people like Elon and Trump. They are still very prone to cult of personality brainwashing.
