If we get Contreras then I want him to catch 100+ games and Maldy 50+ games.

I don't want to pay Contreras 20+ million to play mediocre defense in left field, subpar defense af first and then catch 40-50 games. He's not a great enough hitter to justify all that.

Make him your everyday catcher (110-125 games).

Then the deal makes a little more sense. Still not worth that much when you compare the best catcher in baseball Realmuto getting 23 million. But he's great at the plate and behind the plate. You can justify it.

Hopefully Ninmo gets back from whatever nagging injury he is experiencing by then. One can only hope.

Contreras as a 110-125 game catcher isnt a great hitter because his production is limited due to wear and tear. Contreras with a reduced catching role has the offensive tools to be elite at the plate.

In order to successfully transition to Contreras and Lee in 2024, Lee needs a lot of development this year under Maldy.

70 games of Contreras at DH and Maldy at C without a C3 would mean we would be without a C for injury replacement or pinch hitter replacement for Maldy.

We are on the same page otherwise.

Man I've never seen a more overhyped career of a .256 hitting catcher with a 70 R/80 RBI 162 game average and who doesn't give you plus defense anywhere on the field including catcher.

Yet we are ready to have to be forced to have a 3rd catcher on our roster (definitely not ideal anyway you slice it). Play him a ton in positions he's rarely played before (including LF).

But $21 million a year be damned. He's apparently the elixir to all our troubles.

You people aren't thinking straight. You're in some sort of fantasy land about this dude.

Oh and his absolute best years are behind him at 31 years old having played catcher his entire career.

I think Contreras is great as a catcher, batting wise.

Not so much as a DH.

PS. Every time I check the Texans board, I am happy I can come back here. Let's me know the sun will rise tomorrow.

What about going to the bargain basement for two seasons of Danny Jansen?

If the Braves land Murphy, maybe we can swing a deal for D’Arnaud as a one or two year stop-gap at C2? His contract is pretty reasonable (2 years, $18M left) but word is Atlanta would try to shed it if they get Murphy.

Maybe if everyone in the world disagrees with you it’s not the entire world that’s wrong it’s you.
You are using terrible stats in BA and runs/rbi- not sure if you are doing that because you don’t know better or if you are being disingenuous, and counting totals for a guy that plays 110 games because he’s a catcher and doesn’t consider lineup context is just bad.
He’s somewhere between 20-30% better than league average offensively. At catcher that’s all star level production at Lf and DH it’s above average. Also- you seem to be laboring under the misconception 20M is a lot of money. It’s not man.

Pretty shocking given their catching rotation would seem one of the best in baseball.

I was thinking STL could be lowkey contender for Contreras, but I could see them pushing the chips in for Murphy. Is Yadi done?
