The original Fox News article in the OP refers to Brinton as a "senior Biden DOE official". At what point does someone get the "senior" designation?

Unless you don't know whether they are a he or she, in which case "they" is acceptable.

if I'm not mistaken there's a legally recognized basis for senior executive positions:

    https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/senior-executive-service/

    description:

The Senior Executive Service (SES) lead America’s workforce. As the keystone of the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978, the SES was established to “...ensure that the executive management of the Government of the United States is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the Nation and otherwise is of the highest quality.” These leaders possess well-honed executive skills and share a broad perspective on government and a public service commitment that is grounded in the Constitution.

Members of the SES serve in the key positions just below the top Presidential appointees. SES members are the major link between these appointees and the rest of the Federal workforce. They operate and oversee nearly every government activity in approximately 75 Federal agencies.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) manages the overall Federal executive personnel program, providing the day-to-day oversight and assistance to agencies as they develop, select, and manage their Federal executives.

It's felony theft. I'd prefer public officials to not be felons. It's not the worst felony, but still is poor judgment.

They is overloaded and implicitly taxing because it upends teaching from childhood. No big deal when one accepts it but it's like a speed bump for people new to the concept.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't he/she based on the individual's wishes?

I'd rather have new terms than overwriting old terms.

I don't think there's a good solution at the moment. When grading papers I think the current solution is to allow "they is" and other similar constructions. Or perhaps "ignore" is a better word than "allow." I imagine the pendulum swing in ten years will fall back upon more traditional grammar rules. It is always possible to use the person's name instead of a pronoun.

The guy is objectively a dude. So it's a "he" from me. Maybe if he gets his private parts chopped of, he can start arguing he wants to be called a "she". But it's still one person. So no "they" from me.

FWIW, “they are” is still correct even when using the singular “they” according to this:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/wor...hey are" is still the,the person as they/them.

As long as you don't work with him or her and purposefully harras them like explicitly using language that uses more pronouns to emphasise you don't like them. As long as you don't do that I don't give a **** about how you feel about pronouns. I just don't like people being harassed for something they can't control.

I identify as a grammarian, so of course I agree with you and with Merriam-Webster. But I can tell you that in today’s academic climate, any professor pushing that in grading or correcting it in conversation will have a complaint made about him/her/them.
