He would be expensive but that expense would not provide the same competitive disadvantage as it would to a competing team that is more likely to be spending closer to the maximum of whatever it is they are willing to spend in order to compete. In other words, there's not the same opportunity cost at play.

A little. Meyers, Chas, and Leon have the Astros covered with guys that should provide a lot for defensive value in CF. If the Astros bring in an OF, I'd much prefer a guy with a great bat that can swap with Alvarez in LF and DH. Nimmo is the only CF FA that thumps enough and has been doing it lately that I see as a significant upgrade on who the Astros could play in CF. Even then, I'd probably have Nimmo a lot in LF with Alvarez more at DH.

Our organization has been very strategic in projecting a general openness to all potential acquisition targets, but make no mistake - Cody Bellinger will never be an Astro.

So absolutely awesome is the fact that not only are we the favorite to win it all next year and barring injuries will contend for the next two years with this core at a minimum, but that we are built for the long run as well. Best of all worlds.

I would not be upset if we went after Rodon instead of JV. If we are entertaining paying at minimum 35+ million for JV why don't we pay much less than that for a very young elite pitcher?

The concern of course is the length of the contract he may be seeking. Anybody has a clue at what we are looking at here?

Despite being younger, doesn't Rodon have more problems staying healthy than JV?

I know he's very injury prone but he was pretty damn good the past 2 years with 5th and 6th place Cy Young finishes. He led the NL in FIP last year at 2.25 and K/9.

He has the talent to be a great Verlander replacement, but the health certainly isn't there.

Why so pessimistic? That roster would be worth at least 140 wins. Maybe 145.

for all the hate JV gets apparently for the playoffs, take a look at Rodon's. Yeah no thanks. He's never been that good. he's definitely not in the elite category

Rodon could easily be better than JV next year (Rodon led the NL in FIP). But Rodon is probably going to get a 6-7 year deal, so a much larger commitment for a guy that has never reached 180 innings.

While being always hurt, Rodon has made more starts and pitched more innings each of the last three regular seasons than JV. Rodon has been an ace the past two seasons, and does not appear to be using sticky stuff (if MLB develops a better way to stop the sticky stuff, he would likely not be affected).

If he stays reasonably healthy like the last 2 years, he's going to be a very good pitcher. Though, I doubt he is in the Astros price range for pitchers.

    JV........ 3 years $130 million
    Rodon 3 years $60 million

    Who you got?

Hopefully you don't retort with yet another rather childish answer.

But Rodon isn't signing for $60M unless it is a one 1 year deal.

let us know when he ever wins something significant and starts to accomplish the accolades JV has.

I know I'll be waiting for a very long time
