I have too, a number of times. I’m not sure why people in the USA relate Spain to South and Central America. They are European. I have friends in Spain and they were shocked to learn people viewed them as minorities.
Mattress Mack saying that Hidalgo tries to hog the lime-light and prays on those in need is hilarious coming from the ultimate grifter selling over-priced furniture at an incredible interest rate. Also, I don't know why he has an issue being called a furniture salesman, that it what he is.
Honestly the praise of him by Houstonians is pathetic. Mattress Mack shows wealthy people exactly why superficial charity does wonders for public relations. Dude is definitely the poster child for sleezy door to door salesman who made it big.
It has certainly worked very well for him the last 45 years or so. I know a lot of working class and poor people in Houston think highly of him. I find it kind of odd, but he is constantly on the Houston local news (or was) when I was growing up.
Only reason that I knew was because of my dad. He knew Mack in the early 80's through I guess early 90's. He said Mack was very good in some ways but was not a good guy in a lot of cases and he was a little crazy.
I always had a positive impression of him, until he decided to get all political. Pretty dumb move to alienate half your customer base, specifically the side has more money.
That ad is just SO WEIRD. I don't particularly like Mac but I chalk that ad up to his crazy Osteen-like daughter. The one that's hot. She crazy. Like... sorry I called you furniture salesman (which you are) instead of gambling addict (which you are).

He does sue, so I will be careful with what I say but the man is insane and this political thing isn't anything new for him. He has been this way since the early 80's. He is definitely part of Houston.... he failed at a lot of things, but made it in the furniture business with cut-throat business dealings, a lot of hard work and showmanship. I wanted to see him wrestle Marvin Zindler in his prime.
