The story of a nondisabled transgender woman who identifies as disabled has divided social media.

Jørund Viktoria Alme, 53, recalled always wishing she had been born a woman who was paralyzed from the waist down during a recent interview with Good Morning Norway.

She remembered being in elementary school when another student turned up one day with a splint on his leg and crutches.

"My heart pounded, my pulse increased and I was activated in my body. I was incredibly focused on him and what this was all about," Alme said. "As I understand it in retrospect, it was a recognition of the situation and that it was I who should have been there."

Five years ago, Alme came home with a wheelchair despite not needing one, shocking her wife Agnes. "I didn't know what it would do, but I had a very 'aha' experience when I got to sit in that chair," Alme said.

"When my legs are allowed to rest completely, it stops the triggering of the [body integrity identity disorder], so I get a lot of rest and can use my resources for other things."

Body integrity identity disorder, also known as body integrity dysphoria, is a rare disorder characterized by "an intense and persistent desire" to become physically disabled.

Years before buying the wheelchair, Alme said she realized that despite being born a man, she felt like a woman and wanted to be paralyzed from the waist down.

Now, she uses a wheelchair to get around unless she has to walk for practical reasons, such as to get on and off planes.

"I hope that no one takes it badly that I use the wheelchair as an aid because it helps me," she said when asked about how people might react to her situation.

She added that she doesn't use any resources for disabled people. "For example, I do not use handicap parking, because I have no use for it in my situation," she said. Alme could not be reached for further comment.

Her story sparked a backlash, with Twitter users including some who are disabled themselves sharing their outrage.

"This is so insulting. I'm a wheelchair user," one user wrote. "I went through excruciating pain with spinal & neurological damage. It's not a joke & this to me is mocking me & others who've suffered awfully."

Alme's story was discussed during a segment on Britain's GB News, with Shaun Bailey, a former London mayoral candidate, saying: "It's insulting. If you really are disabled and it's made your life tough in every way, you must watch that report and be so offended."

It also caught the attention of German politician Georg Pazderski, who tweeted that in the past, Alme "would have ended up in a psychiatric ward."

Mumsnet users were also angered in a thread on the forum, with one commenting: "Some of us have to use a wheelchair all of the time and can't opt out."

However, some commenters were sympathetic to Alme's situation.

"Yes, it's strange and difficult to understand. It's probably also very provocative for actual wheelchair users! But there is a diagnosis behind it, here! Mental illness is real, even if it sometimes seems completely incomprehensible," one Twitter user wrote.

Another user replied: "I am a wheelchair user and also have walking function. Jørund V. Alme uses the wheelchair as the aid it is. There is nothing provocative about it to me. If a wheelchair can help with mental disorders, it just makes me happy. Everyone deserves peace of mind and body."

Sure why not …”self identify” is code for “acceptable pretend” - handicap parking lots are next

Who’s defending this… what is even on the line to defend regarding this random ass story lol?

Feels like most people who really care about these stories are those searching for something to be shocked, offended or angry about

It’s funny and bizarre, by why is it anger invoking?

I get why trans people participating in ranked/competitive sporting can be upsetting, but this isn’t that

I am not upset, but I would say this is a good example for why we have to look at how things are objectively vs. catering to subjective sensitivities.

    Where is the line?

Once you start catering to subjective sensitivities, where do you stop?

Objectively, there are only two sexes, biologically. But if you say this, you get attacked and canceled nowadays.

Why would someone who is a man but thinks he is a woman have more of a right to be treated as if that were objectively the case (even if it isn't) while someone who is not handicapped but identifies as handicapped gets (rightly) treated as a non-handicapped person?

What if you are not black, but you identify as black - should you benefit from affirmative action? Etc. etc.

To me, that's the more general question one needs to think about.

For me, it's simple. Everyone gets treated as what they objectively are. That includes at least pre-op transgender people.

Just because I identify as President of the USA doesn't mean I can expect to get treated as that.

This is just one example of how the world has gone mad.

But how is this person being catered to?

Dude gal bought their own wheelchair and isn't getting or asking for any assistance

What's the story, what's to debate or defend lol

Trying to extrapolate these totally random stories into some broader thing of significance that's deserving of a national conversation doesn't make sense to me. This story making rounds reminds me of the classic trap of being so against "X" to the point that the people complaining become infinitely larger and or more annoying than whatever they were complaining about in the first place. If someone is sick of hearing about weird trans stories all day but can't stop sharing weird trans stories all day you are what you hate.

Usually, people in wheelchairs get special attention and people defer to them, etc.

Which reminds me of something I see all the time on planes (more so in the US than anywhere else). I see people, sometimes quite obese, get pushed in a wheelchair to the plane. Then they walk in perfectly fine. They walk around on the plane, too. Afterwards, they get picked up again in a wheelchair.

I can't tell if they really have a disability or if they are just lazy, sometimes.

These are fair questions and points to discuss. But I believe that the vast majority of people who suffer from Trans outrage have neither the desire or capacity to engage in this analysis. Stories like this only serve to deepen their feelings of hate and “my god this is so ridiculous”, with zero desire to recognize that this particular person isn’t impacting anyone or taking benefits. It would be no different if this person identified as groceries and liked getting around town via shopping cart.

Exactly. Maybe ATW isn’t angry and wants to have an intellectual discussion, but stories like this are propagated not to stir good debate, but to increase outrage.

I don't think they get propagated to increase outrage, but just because it's so bizarre. Dog bites man is not a headline, man bites dog is one.

The post I responded to came off as angry when I read it, maybe he's not angry? It's hard to convey temperament over text, but it does seem like an emotionally engaged comment though.

I can’t judge intent of the news producers. I will say this - I think you posted about it to have an intellectual discussion. The vast majority of people post stuff like this so they can be outraged about it. Including some of the posters on this site. I think we all know who I’m talking about. It’s rather pathetic.

I'm not outraged at all, but I can see how people who actually need a wheelchair might be.
