The Rams changed to those uniforms in Spring of 2000. Had Houston even been picked to host the 2004 Superbowl by then? Edit: Turns out they were chosen in the Fall of 99. Hot damn.
NEVER QUESTION ME!! Yeah; that was not the final '04 Super Bowl committee logo - once the Rams changed, they redid the logo. But the intention as for that logo to be the color scheme trial/reveal for the team.
I had not heard Stallions was a choice - not my favorite name, honestly. But, I also haven't lived with it for 22 years.
http://web.archive.org/web/20061206...nn.com/2000/LOCAL/southwest/09/07/hci.texans/ "The Houston Texans -- our brand of football." Wednesday's unveiling was the culmination of a 10-month process among McNair, his staff and NFL Properties, the league's marketing arm. The three finalists were Texans, Stallions and Apollos. Ultimately, it came down to Texans and Stallions. "We wanted something unique to Houston and the NFL," McNair said. "Stallions was one of my favorites because I love horses, but the NFL already has Broncos and Colts. And the San Diego Chargers' secondary logo is a horse. "I hope our fans like Texans and our bull logo. A lot of hard work went into the selections, just as a lot of hard work went into the development of this city and state."
Just thinking about all the cross-marketing possibilities with NASA angers me. How cool would it have been to have NASA themed uniforms, space helmets, space/alien/Star Trek type cheerleader outfits....even the mascot would have been badass. And on top of it all, you would have kept with the theme of the other sports teams in this city, and really tied the whole thing together. Leave it up to the McNairs to give us the most vanilla, milquetoast, blah brand they could have possibly chosen, while simultaneously ensuring that our team will always be cucked by the Cowboys and their branding. The McNairs have really been a scourge on the city, and I say that as someone who has pretty decent knowledge on the inner workings of their family.
I remember you posting something simar before. Always dug it. I think they should get away from the white. Possibly deep steel blue too.
Not to mention it goes with our whole city (Astros, rockets, hell even Aeros, tho not sure what a dynamo is) I’ve always liked those connections: Kansas City - all teams are leaders (chief, Royal, kings-moved to Sacramento) Pittsburgh - all teams wear black and yellow across sports would have been cool for apollos.
A dynamo is basically an energy source, which is on brand enough for Houston and/or Space Exploration. I totally forgot that the AAF had an Apollos team: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_Apollos Figures Orlando did it. The imposter Space City.
Apollos is like... Zueses or Herculeses, makes no literal sense. That might make it perfect for a football team. e.g. "The lone gunmen." I guess we could have had the "missions" or "meteors" would have been pretty nice, given the trajectory of the franchise. I've always wondered if they chose 'Texans' to make sure there would never be any pressure to move to a different city.
It really lends itself to being a sports logo. That A would look really sleek on a helmet. Also easy to make an H logo. Just made too much sense
Houston Herculeses is a name befitting this franchise. Prove me wrong. I wish I could find the old skit with Bill Murray as Fat Lazy Hercules..."That rock is too large, I could lift a smaller one"
