I thought the Correa deal was fair Carlos thought he deserved more but we weren't going to give him a 10 year deal. For one the Astros never give out 10 year deals and two he is injury prone. He might have played himself. No one is probably giving him a 10 year deal after he was injured last year and is now approaching 30 and could be on the decline of his career.
Just think about how long baseball has been around to have the best postseason bullpen in history. Also one of the best in the regular season as well. You may never see that happen ever again. How is this not an achievement that Click can claim under his tenure as Astros GM. People are saying it was all Luhnow. This team was much more dominant than any team assembled under the Luhnow era. It took us 7 games against the Yankees in the ALCS and 7 against the Dodgers in the WS to win it in 17. We went to 7 games and lost to an inferior Nats wild card team in 19. We came one win shy of tying the all time Astros regular season win record. We went 7-0 this playoffs leading up to the WS. Should have won the WS in 5 games if not for the choke in game 1. That would be a 11-1 playoff record. Even with a 11-2 playoff record that is still one of the most dominant runs in baseball history. No one wants to give Click any credit for this team that's ridiculous.
Jones was always full of himself from the second they started having success. This is the first time Crane has fully pulled rank and they’ve been winning for almost 10 years. He had 3 years worth of moves/negotiations to judge Click on.
Pedro Baez was his very first move!… pretty sure they’re still paying him. I gave Click full credit for this bullpen and I didn’t think his deadline deals were bad. But in reality, Montero was a throw-in from the Graveman trade and Stanek ended up getting buried. So Hector Nerris… who was basically what they wanted Baez to be… is the acquisition that was most notable.
He built part of it and yes he deserves credit for adding Neris, Montero & Stanek. Luhnow is responsible for Pressly and Abreu.
This was similar to the Correa offer. A "we have to offer you something, but we know you won't accept it" type offer.
Everyone acting like Luhnow was always perfect did we forget about the failures in 18, and 19 like they don't exist. We should have went to WS in 20 too we shouldn't have ever been down 3-0 to the Rays that was Luhnow team that Click inherited in 2020. What happens the next full year he is in charge. WS berth in 2021 and win it all again in 2022. Like what is the expectation here how can you do much better than one ALCS appearance, two WS appearance, and one title in 3 years as a GM.
Nope. Montero was a large part of that deal, as was noted at the time. So you're saying that Click hit on 6 of 7 relievers? That's a pretty ****ing nails track record. Yall carry on now.
Nothing wrong with not offering a 10 year deal. But the format of 10 year deals is that the team underpays the first 5-6 years and overpays the last 4-5 years. It cuts the upfront cost for the team. The team just offered the underpay for the first 5-6 years part - that's what made it insulting and a contract Correa would never take. He'd get underpaid for his prime years and then be a free agent too late. A short-term deal could have worked (as he took with Minnesota). A long-term deal would have been fine. A medium term with an opt-out would have been credible. Instead, the Astros offered the one combo that Correa (or any other player) would never accept. That wasn't by accident.
This is like saying Yordan was just a throw-in for getting rids of Fields' salary. There's no reason for a throw-in of a reliever with an ERA of 7 unless you see something in him and think you can fix him. No one would have thought anything of if the Astros just traded for Graveman.
Anyway you slice it no player is worth 30 million or more a year unless their name is Ohtani, Trout, or Judge.
Outside of Steve Patterson (NBA/NHL)... any notable cross sport general manager? ...since Jack Easterby is around </s>
Everyone gives him credit for Montero, Stanek, and Neris. We give Luhnow credit for everyone else including Javier, Pressly, Garcia and Valdez. Also Pena, Altuve, and Alvarez who weren't top prospects when they signed. We also give Click credit for Baez, Odorizzi, Dubon and goodrum.
Luhnow did rebuild this team but also did scetchy things like signing the woman abusing POS Osuna because he wanted to win. He did build a great team but was maybe not the most ethically sound person. He knew about Osuna issues and signed him to the team anyways. Worst thing you could say about Click is he tried to trade for Contreras but Crane nixed that trade because Dusty didnt like his locker room fit.
The Astros took on his salary, no? But yes, he gets the credit for his turnaround…. I actually think Dusty helped Montero regain some confidence during the season as well (I thought that was one of the best “managing” Dusty did all year).
Agreed. And they’ll continue to be the favorites for next year (and beyond) based on the current core.
Dusty is notoriously bad for managing pitchers 2002 WS game 6 and 2022 WS game 1 are the most glaring examples of this. I don't think he should get most of the credit for the pitchers performances on this team. If anything I believe Josh Miller did a heck of a job developing these guys just like Strom did before him
