As long as he doesn’t sign Julio Franco as the big offseason move (10 yrs past his prime) after making it too the World Series. correction: It would be about 25 yrs past his prime now.
Crane was a good babysitter but he missed on the Mancini and Vazquez additions because none of those would have happened if they had gotten a read on what Dusty would have done. I am very indifferent on this, but I do not have the information that Crane and Co have.
If we can't go with Luhnow, then I'd be good with David Stearns or Sig Mejdal. The challenge with hiring for the role is that Jim Crane has shown himself to be micromanager and unwilling to give full autonomy to the position. Older, established GMs won't be interested in that arrangement. We'll need a step-up candidate who has not been a GM yet. Chemistry with Crane will also be very important.
I get it with his injuries. But Verlander did sit two of 3 years also. I would still say deGrom is the superior investment given money is the about the same.
What’s difference between the contract that Sharp is under and the one that Stearns has? Neither are GMs.
Never the less I stand by what I said. Urquidy will be a top 60 pitcher in 23. With 30 teams an 5 starters per team that makes him a #2 starter. furthermore he has not reached his peak yet and should continue to improve over the next three years. Verlander (who I love) has managed to sustain his ability well beyond the point at which most pitchers are forced out due to age related decline. He could possibly make it another year but his chances are not good and some decline seems certain. He could even make it two more years but I would not bet on it. Three years will be near to impossible and in the end time always wins. Not sometimes. Not usually. Always. I want JV back but not at the price of giving up on a solid young pitcher. and not at the price of a contract that is almost sure to outlast him.
Most contracts allow someone to leave if it’s a promotion. So an Asst GM can take a GM job. Stearns was/is a President so he cannot leave for another job while he’s under contract unless the Brewers let him.
Urquidy and Garcia are similar. Very close to middle rotation starters with some success when thrust into roles by necessity. They should not be overvalued or undervalued. Even if we do have an excess of riches.
That is one slot above a 3 starter. I do not know whether he progresses or takes a step back. But this is the nature of all pitchers. This is why a pitcher with JVs track record of excellence is so rare. How many pitchers have three or more Cy Youngs?
A number strikingly similar to the number of pitchers that pitch successfully into their 40s. Both are extremely rare and for good reason.
The difference between the two are so small ranking them differently is an art rather than a science.
There are very few who are successful enough at 39 to even try. JV has already shown he is exceptional. And pitchers of all ages will often disappoint over the course of a few seasons.
Normally you can read between the lines on any given situation and figure out what happened and what the truth it, but I've got nothing on this one. It's not clear. But it is what it is. Moving on. Click should do well. And Crane will get what he wants. So I doubt there will be talking on either side.
Oh. I was under the assumption Stearns was no longer the President and was working in an “advisory role.”
About three days ago posts indicated the sides on playing time and line-up were the opposite of what we had been led to believe. Dusty was pushing to play Pena in the two hole? McCormick getting starts? What can I say? Those were some of my criticisms of Dusty's line-ups.
