The heroes are the interesting part, not the world. Who in this movie is going to set the stage for another Avengers assemble god tier movie moment in Kang or Secret Wars? That's the draw to these movies. A super powerful protagonist whose backstory creates fandom and sets up future collaborations with so much star power its basically impossible to not get super hyped for. They should have recast Black Panther or had Killmonger redeemed and take the lead. I'll begrudgingly see this movie to keep up with the story, but not excited at all. Reminder of how baller of the original trailer was:
Reviews looks mostly positive, but are coming in decidedly lower than the first movie (-9% in RT, and -17 in metacritc).
The fact that he is reviewing this through a Black representation lens is problematic and negativity sells so most reviewers nitpick things. Also, people just get upset because it's not the movie they want. The fact that he is pining for T'Challa tells me all I need to know.
So why can't this hero be interesting? They did recast Black Panther. And I enjoy the world building just as much as the heroes, I would have been down for Killmonger to take the lead as well, but I don't understand why you would be watching this movie begrudgingly instead of just judging it on its own merit. I think they have been too beholden in trying to set up another infinity war type scenario instead of letting it happen organically. Would still like to hear what you think of the movie because I know you are pretty level-headed about most things.
Reviews are mostly positive, but it's trending toward more mid than Overwhelming praise. I guess you can't say everybody is just fanboying and nitpicking for a particular audience. A lot of 7's out there. I thought the reviews would be much better.
I hate spoilers but that actually made me more interested it seems there will be layers to the story.
I would say an 86% for a MCU sequel is pretty good, considering what came before it. The first BP was lightning in a bottle as it represented more than a typical superhero movie. The sequel has to both live up to that and deal with an main actor's death in real life? I don't remember the second movie scoring better than the first movie for any MCU property, except for 'Winter Soldier' and 'Ant-Man and the Wasp.'
First one needed a lot more killmonger. Wish they recast and had a redemption story for Killmonger as the new BP. It worked for Winter Solider/Bucky and you can't get any better than Michael B Jordan. Since KIllmonger died, and since it wouldn't make sense for him to just show up as BP, a complete recast of T'Challa was the right move for me all along. This one looks like a 2.5 hour movie built entirely around Chadwicks passing. Overly emotional drama and crying for a major character we're supposed to believe dies off screen, but we know really just passed in real life and have to not think of that. No story arch that makes us emotionally tied to the character like Tony Stark. Chadwick passed away 2 years ago now. He was honored as the real life man he was. That was enough. This crosses that line of taking itself far too seriously in contrast with Love and Thunder not taking itself seriously enough. Just no balance. A recast jumps right into the movie, and you go on from scene 1 and that guy is officially BP
The critics i've read say it sucks. Long and boring. Others are saying the same thing but in a round about way so as to avoid riling up the fangirls. Hell one even said The Women King was a superior film in every respect.
