Musk said he wants to defeat the spam bots, to "authenticate all real humans". That was one thing I was looking forward to. To verify all accounts but still left room for anonymous accounts. That way, as a user, you can know who is real or not. This benefits the Twitter user base.

I don't know how the hell we got "elitist status" to be associated with the pre-Musk blue mark. I certainly don't think that way. I mean, how the heck is a verified person an elitist? It's like saying a real human is an elitist and a non-real human is not.

Can you not verify your identity? Send in your ID?
Do you really think you would ever get a blue check mark? The answer is no.

I think it's the other way around. Spammer/bot would absolutely pay $8/m to get their message out. This is why verification is important.

I don't understand your point. You are implying verification without an indication for the user base to know.

Wasn't that the verification system for Twitter? Send in some ID to confirm who you are. Get a blue check mark to show that you have been confirmed. Call it the ID checkmark if you want. If there isn't any indication, no one know you have been verified.

Twitter values anonymous accounts and it also values the many tools 3rd parties built for analytics. Its hard to detect bad actors.

The subscription model helps people who want to engage on the platform. It has little direct impact on those who use the platform to get information. It makes a much better experience for everyone....except to those who benefit from having any and all activity (ie: Twitter executives)

The verification system is for prominent people, however that is defined. Politicians, celebrities, ect ...

You and I would never get verified, even with ID.

No one thinks the checkmark is elite. Musk is trying to manufacture some sort of status tied to the checkmark as an incentive to pay the subscription fee. He's doing anything he can to create some sort of "value" that can be tied to a Twitter Blue subscription.

I think subscription is the right path forward if Twitter has any hope of profitability but Musk is going about this as ineptly as possible. I'm less optimistic by the day that he'll manage to create any revenue out of this. Companies are fine cutting ad spending on a marginal platform like Twitter so that revenue pool will probably shrink over time so he better hit a home run with the subscription changes and so far he's done pretty poorly on that front.

Things going swimmingly. In addition to being sued by employees (former?) for violating mass-layoff laws, he posted this today.

Seems maybe advertisers just don't want to be associated with him. But yeah, blame everyone else for it.

It's defined here. It's for anyone from individual creators to government officials. If you aren't a creator, there is no need to be verified. Though I would have liked it to be expanded to include anyone by choice.

Musk might be better off if he announced he's hand off and let someone else take over running Twitter. Having the Saudi "chainsaw" prince as the 2nd largest investor isn't a good thing either.

He did this to himself. He was never a true "free speech" advocate without any content moderation, but he played as one for months. He did try a very hard U-turn recently (now I get why) on Twitter.

Absolutely. His general views on free speech are:

    1. He should be able to say anything he wants.
    2. Advertisers shouldn't be able to walk away from him.
    3. His employees can definitely not saying anything they want.
    4. Corporations, except his, shouldn't oppose anything-goes speech.
    5. Governments can ban speech anytime they want.
    6. Twitter should be a place for true free speech, except that it shouldn't be allowed to be a free speech hellscape.

this doesn't make sense. As of now it is engagement that bumps your replies to the top. so now a russians can just pay 8 bucks to automatically bump their result to the top without having to create any spam bots.

me thinks this isn't about spam bots at all but about just getting out of debt

    EXTREMELY MESSED UP! - Elon

Nobody should care about a billionaires business problems if the business isn't publicly traded. Like... it KILLS me that Thai Gourmet closed. But I'm not sweating MY TIME & ENERGY worrying about THEIR problem. What in the **** even.
