I'm not part of that ecosystem so I don't know. But I have always wondered... if that ecosystem goes on "repeat" (aka echo chamber) or does it allow for new information to discredit/debunk incorrect information? Perhaps those that have pierced that ecosystem can share their experience....

Sounds like the "underwear" is due to a too-liberal interpretation of Mr. Pelosi "wearing a loose-fitting pajama shirt and boxer shorts" statement likely when it's not yet known by the public that the incident happened at 2 am when Mr. Pelosi was sleeping in his bed (and so it's nothing out of the normal that he's in that clothing). When the full details are not yet known, this type of very loose interpretation can happen, especially by a politically motivated individual or media.

THE BUZZ: Charges filed yesterday against suspected assailant David DePape unearthed more shocking details about the attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband — including ones that seemed to intentionally counter disinformation swirling around the disturbing incident.

High-profile conservatives, including Donald Trump Jr. and Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins, have fueled a discredited version of events in recent days. Among the unfounded claims: that a third person was in the house; and that DePape was arrested in his underwear. Both claims have been knocked down by authorities, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from running amok. Baseless claims and jokes about a relationship between Paul Pelosi and the attacker have spread rapidly in conservative circles. Trump Jr. on Sunday retweeted a “Paul Pelosi” Halloween costume featuring men’s underwear and a hammer. Fox’s Tucker Carlson made mention of it, too.

That could be the reason for a peculiar detail recounted by San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins on Monday when she discussed the charges against DePape, 42. As Jenkins tells it, the assailant broke in through a glass door and made his way to the bedroom of Mr. Pelosi, who “was wearing a loose fitting pajama shirt and boxer shorts.” Jenkins also noted that there were just two people in the house when authorities arrived.

I mean if I live in a prominent neighborhood and my spouse was a very controversial congress person and my house had been target by vandals, I think i would have my alarm system armed at 2am when Im in bed. I just find it very odd he wasn't used a basic tool many middle class americans use on a nightly basis.

He should probably be happy something worse hasn't already happened if his security is this lax.

I sometimes forget to arm my system. It happens.

He's an old man. Maybe he simply forgot.

It could be armed and not triggered. That happens too.

The FBI report has a witness account of a "siren" going off, which sounds like an alarm.

I think the only logical conclusion is that because the alarm didn't prevent it, then his statements to law enforcement, posting history, statement from family is all null and void. He was really a homosexual liberal.

I didn't go there (leaving room for just curiosity), but yes, what's the point of the alarm anyway? I don't get it.

In general, I'm shocked, to be honest by how much conspiracy thinking there is on this by *normal* folks.

It was determined by the attacker's statements to law enforcement.

I haven't caught up in a few hours. Did he say he was influenced by GOP propaganda?

He spouted it in his statement in addition to his internet activity and well established history.

Since he mirrored right wing talking points to the authorities in describing his motives, there isn't a question.

But you keep trying even though it hasn't worked out for you so far.

I am fully expecting you and everyone who liked your post to argue with the same passion when it comes to definitely pinning down the motive the next time someone shouts "Allahu Akbar" and murders many people.

Because the only thing I hear from you and your ilk then is...either crickets...or some bullshit about "socio-economic factors"..."noooo....it has nothing to do with Islam...blablablablabla". @FranchiseBlade is one of those people.

And here enters mr know it all with a hot take that (spoiler alert) blames the victim who happens to be a Democrat. Nothing about the online misinformation that even his own lawyer mentioned. Just right in to blame the victim and wink and nod at the right wing conspiracy theory.

I forget to turn on my alarm all the time because most systems are motion sensitive and it’s annoying when it’s buzzing every time my dog takes a poop. Also those systems are often too slow anyways. His biggest mistake is replacing sliding glass doors with more secure doors you can’t just bust with a hammer and jump in.

So yeah we all could do better to stay on top
of our home security but it still doesn’t mean that I should be blamed if someone else breaks in my home and beats me over the head with a hammer.

I need to remember to always set our alarm, quit wearing only underwear to sleep, not try to defend myself, not try to contact police and get rid of our impact resistant glass, just in case someone tries to break into our house

I am happy to denounce religious extremism from Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and anyone else. One way to battle that extremism is with good education and economic opportunities. It isn't 100% but it does help.

    On security...

Capitol Police cameras caught break-in at Pelosi home, but no one was watching

The Capitol Police first installed cameras around Pelosi’s home more than eight years ago; she has an around-the-clock security detail; and for many months after the attacks of Jan. 6, 2021, a San Francisco police cruiser sat outside her home day and night. But hours after Pelosi left San Francisco last week and returned to D.C., much of the security left with her, and officers in Washington stopped continuously monitoring video feeds outside her house.

The targeted security and lack of full-time, active surveillance — even at the home of the member of Congress with the most death threats — reflect the competing demands facing local and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as the balances that lawmakers, their families and security officials have tried to strike in the nearly two years since the attack on the Capitol.

The Capitol Police have been working to implement more than 100 security improvements recommended by outside experts, including enhancements to officer training, equipment, protocols and staffing. But the department has simultaneously faced a tenfold increase in threats to members of Congress, who regularly return to their home districts and crisscross the country.

In a statement Tuesday, Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said that while there have been improvements — for instance, the department is on track to hire 280 additional officers this year — the country’s “political climate” is going to necessitate “additional layers of physical security.”

    ...

Threats to lawmakers are not rare but have dramatically increased in the past several years. Since 2016, when Donald Trump was elected president, threats of violence against lawmakers recorded by the Capitol Police have surged from roughly 900 cases in 2016 to 9,625 in 2021. Meanwhile, the share of threats that federal authorities pursue for criminal prosecution in the same period ranged from 7 percent to 17 percent of cases referred by the Capitol Police.

The Capitol Police twice instituted changes to member security — following the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in 2011, and the 2017 shooting that targeted Republican lawmakers practicing for the yearly Congressional Baseball Game and gravely wounded then-House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (La). After that shooting, lawmakers were allowed to spend up to $4,000 on installing security systems in their district offices back home.

In the months after Jan. 6, 2021, House Democrats repeatedly reminded leaders that their campaign coffers were not enough to pay for personal security or upgrades to their homes. Congress has, in turn, approved increases to office budgets for individual lawmakers — allowing them to pay for private security to assist them at events back home — and set aside nearly $5 million in a separate fund to allow for security upgrades to their personal residences.

Starting Aug. 15, lawmakers were given up to $10,000 for setting up security systems in their homes. Lawmakers have been told to work with security officials in the Capitol or with their local police to install devices such as indoor and outdoor security cameras; motion sensors; duress buttons; and window, door and broken-glass monitors.
